Theodore Wafer, 55, sat stone-faced, staring straight ahead as the jury delivered its verdict after less than two full days of deliberations. He was also convicted of involuntary manslaughter and firearms charges. [The shotgun] is a dangerous weapon and the way he handled it - he handled it like a toy, and as a result a 19-year-old is dead. - Wayne County assistant prosecuting attorney Patrick Muscat The airport maintenance worker faces up to life in prison for killing Renisha McBride, 19, with a shotgun blast through his locked screen door after he was awakened in the early hours of Nov. 2 by repeated, violent knocking on his door. McBride, who had been drinking and smoking marijuana, was apparently disoriented when she arrived Wafer's house seeking help after getting in a car crash, according to testimony.....

Protecting one’s life is a right, but most need to learn to evaluate the dangers.

In Texas, after dark, he probably wouldn’t have been charged.

This is a sad case all the way around. A young woman who [it seems] had no criminal record or intent and was a good person made a mistake of banging on more than one door of a home near a neighborhood where feral human animals roam and the confused owner hastily defended himself.

Manslaughter should have been the maximum charge here. Of course, a probated or short sentence would probably result in Sharpton and Jackson instigated riots.

If he was convicted of 2nd Degree murder I don’t think he could also be convicted of involuntary manslaughter. Unless he killed two people...

This has nothing to do with race. Damn the media for trying to make it that.
It appears that the verdict was the right one.

“I once shot a porch.

When I was a kid this guy asked me if I’d paint his porch for $20. I said heck yes. So I painted it. Then he got all mad when I told him, “You know that porch? It says Lamborghini on the front and back.”

What does it say about shooting an unarmed woman knocking on your door and shooting her through the locked screen door?

At night, it doesn’t matter if she’s armed. Beating on someone’s door in the middle of the night can get you killed.

Actually we used to play a game called ringing the doorbell which annoyed grownups to no end.

Now you say that Texas law is clear about shooting an unarmed woman knocking on your door and shooting her through the locked screen door? What is it clear about?

I think the idea here is to put this guy away for as long as possible. For whatever crazy reason, he seems to dangerously overwhelmed by exaggerated fears. In this case, he shot a little girl who knocked or banged on his door. This isn't reasonable behavior. Again, it may not be his fault that he is so fearful of the world, but folks like him need to be protected in a safe, secure place.

He should probably never be released because I'm not sure there is a cure for his kind of fearfulness and insecurity.

I believe that the "car crash" was actually her driving into a parked car. She could easily have killed someone.

It qualifies as crimminal mischief at night.

A drunk, stoned, bloody teen banging on the door insistantly late at night risks their life.
