Panera uses iPads with attached card-swipes mounted on a counter top. Sleek and gorgeous. Ordering is a breeze. One restaurant near here has six of them.
Of course, Panera really needs them. For some reason, it takes Panera customers unduly long to give an order to a human, such that it's not worth going in (to a store without iPad ordering) if there's any kind of a line.
So... I’d rather place the order myself

You got a machine to make it to your specs? Otherwise you are still dealing with a person.
Now that's funny right there, I don't care who you are! Like a Franchisee has a choice in what to buy.
They’ve seen how WalMart handles these things, and so they move forward with it.

Remember this old Burger King commercial?
"Vintage Burger King Commercial - Have it Your Way - 1974"
("...hold the pickle, hold the lettuce, special orders don't upset us...")
All they would need on their burger machine would be a "hold the pickle" button, and a "hold the lettuce" button, etc. The machine would then build the burger to the specs the customer entered.
Then in the corner of the "restaurant", they might have a complaint department for burgers made incorrectly by the machine:
I don’t know. All these labor intensive starter jobs were good for transitioning teenagers from not working to being used to working. Paying minimal wages, they provided an opportunity for entry workers to get used to getting to work on time, meeting commitments, working in a structured environment, and following instructions.
These entry level jobs paid poorly so they were a good motivator to return to school or to learn a craft or develop a skilled trade. You didn’t stay in these minimum wage entry level jobs unless you were dumb or unmotivated.
Ever since the Democrats decided that entry level jobs should provide immigrants with as $50K/year salary, employers have been looking to outsource where possible or automate if they can’t outsource.
I don’t know what the unskilled people are supposed to do. They are kind of screwed over since the Democrats have ruined the old system raising the minimum wage to where employers will no longer over pay unskilled people at the wages normally reserved for skilled labor.
I guess they will have to live at home or go on the doll or like you said, become criminals.
Everything the Democrats are doing is ruining America and they are ruining this as well.
Boy, that minimum wage idea works wonders.
You drive up & hear, “ Wecum to %&$# (unintelligible). Would you like to try our ^&$%@!*. Can I &())^#@er”. Then repeat endlessly your order until he/she/it tells you to drive up to the window, where you receive everything but what you ordered.
The speaker system was new in the 1940s. The order taker barely speaks understandable English, or not. The traffic noise around the restaurant makes a purchase nearly impossible.
It really isn’t even the threat.
I recently walked into a local “Get Go,” to pickup a quick lunch and buy gas. The counter where you can order a lunch had a sign hanging over a machine that takes your order and payment. You then step down and wait for the kitchen chef to put your order up on the counter.
You can never succeed in explaining cause and effect to people that choose willful stupidity. Those willfully stupid folks are the fast food employees that think they should be paid as if they were rocket scientists. Sorry, technology will make most of your jobs obsolete and you cannot be retrained to service or maintain that technology. You are functionally obsolete.
Ah yes, ordering Chinese.
“I’d like the #7”
“I sorry, I don’t know 7. What is tha?”
“it’s the Kung pow chicken”
Shouts toward the back where all the woks are, “Keeng pouwow nee ha ha”. Then asks, “Genral Pow chikhen... You waa fried rice?”
“No thank you”
Shouts back to the kitchen again, “Kee fou mow de la shna” then back to you, “so chik with rice you wait 30-45 min ok?”
“Ok”
“What your address?”
“210 bakersville lane apartment five A”
“Two seven makersville lane?”
“No, two TEN bakersville lane”
“Two ten makersville lane got it ...30-45 min ok?”
“No, two ten BAKERsville lane”
“No? 30 minutes fastest we do. We can’t deliver faster.”
“No I mean it’s BAKERSville lane, not makersville”
“OHhh, so sorry,” , says something back to the kitchen again and they both laugh then, “ok 210 bakersville lane. Is there appartment number?”
And then after providing it again, you get your food closer to an hour later.
And they give you extra soy sauce in the bag, but leave out the Duck sauce. Again.
You drive up & hear, Wecum to %&$# (unintelligible). Would you like to try our ^&$%@!*. Can I &())^#@er. Then repeat endlessly your order until he/she/it tells you to drive up to the window, where you receive everything but what you ordered.
“What-a-Burger” opened a store in my area about a year ago. The “greeting” message with the specials and suggestions at the drive through is automated. I’ve noticed at most of the fast food joints the person working the window has a headset.
It’s not like it was when I was in High School.
