Which are the best miniseries ever?

Posted on 07/27/2014 7:40:44 PM PDT by MNDude

I don't watch TV much these days, so I can't say what have been popular miniseries in the past decade or so, but I remember there used to be big budget miniseries on TV all the time (A.D., The Winds of War, Roots. Etc). In your opinion, what were the greatest miniseries of all time?

Lots of characters. Some good ones have died.

I suggest you watch 2-3 episodes and you’ll either be hooked or walk away.

I don’t watch. I’m turned off by that crap. I thought the story was very interesting, even compelling but the porn scenes stopped me from watching.

Plus I would be embarrassed if anyone saw me watching it.

So no thanks.

"My favs; Rome, Big Love, 6ft Under., Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, MadMen, Downton Abby, Mr. Selfridge."

Not much of a TV watcher, to put it mildly, but those are to the best of my meager knowledge, just regular old TV garbage shows.

Quite a bit different than what I believe is being discussed here as a miniseries, like Justified, The Americans, and a few others that I did spend the time to record and watch.

What haunts me is the very ending,

“... but when the end came, it would not come from the sea, it would come from the air ... irresistible ... unimaginable ... Da da da da Da da daaaaa ...”

Not going to say it was the best, but the one I really enjoyed was an Australian series, Against the Wind. About the settlement of Australia by the convict labor from Ireland, Scotland, and the cities of England.

I will never forget Sir Laurence Olivier’s voice as spoke his first words of the series .....”Down this road, on a summer day in 1944 . . . The soldiers came.....”

A miniseries has more than 2 and usually 13 or fewer espisodes, plus it has a predetermined ending. So a lot of the current cable series being mentioned are not miniseries. Occasionally, a series such as Upstairs, Downstairs starts out as a miniseries and then becomes so popular that it is brought back as a regular series.

Thornbirds had its moments but all in all, it was all about a selfish man dragging a young woman thru his life, and ultimately making her miserable....instead of doing the right thing and keeping his distance....I need HEROES not weakling priests...
