Could Ebola Spread to the United States?

One reason why the Ebola virus's spread is possible in theory is that it can take up to 21 days for an infected person to show symptoms. That's ample time for someone with Ebola to travel a long distance by plane and arrive in the United States or Europe, said Derek Gatherer, a researcher at Lancaster University in the United Kingdom who studies virus genetics and evolution. [5 Things You Should Know About Ebola]

But if an infected person arrived in the United States and showed symptoms, doctors would be quick to suspect Ebola based on the patient's travel history, and isolate the patient, Gatherer said.

"Western medical services would probably cope quite well with catching Ebola as it arrived, because we'd be aware of people coming from Ebola-affected areas," Gatherer said.

Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of preventive medicine and infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, agreed. Health officials do not think that there is a risk of sustained spread of Ebola in the United States, he said.

"Ebola is not going to come to the United States and become embedded in the United States," Schaffner said.

Especially since the twice unconstitutionally elected Islamic foreign born Kenyan is taking foreign invaders and flying them all around the country.

This is where I live.......

I think geographically limited outbreaks of ebola are possible in the United States. Necessary for this to occur would be very close human contact with sharing of bodily fluids intentional or not, as well as poor sanitation and a reluctance to go to the doctor when early symptoms arise. That could be poor slum areas with recent immigrants crammed too many to an apartment, or it could be a bath house in The Castro District. I suspect it skews heavily toward urban.

If it will knock us from First world status to third world levels, the kenyan would welcome it in a heart beat

Aids spread from Africa. Other diseases can as well.

Ebola is a virus that is too efficient a killer for its own good. Even in Africa, with no medical attention at all, outbreaks burn themselves out.

It kills so thoroughly there are no survivors to continue spreading it.

There is, BTW, a perfectly native virus with symptoms not totally dissimilar to those of Ebola.

Hantavirus. Killed my sister’s best friend in CO. Works much faster the Ebola. Dead in 72 hours from exposure.

Generally spread by inhaling dust with mouse urine on it.

The article is correct in saying that Ebola could make it to the United States and is correct in saying that the disease probably could be contained quickly. However, the disease would spread beyond "patient zero" and we would see more than 600 fatalities that have occurred in Africa so far.

The article is incorrect in saying that medical establishments would quickly recognize and isolate Ebola patients. It is not a disease practitioners ever see outside one or two lectures. It would present as a mystery disease at first, another vague flu-like collection of symptoms. Samples sent to CDC take longer than the movies to be analyzed. By the time it has become a hemorrhagic case in 4-5 days, it is too late for that patient and an unknown number have been exposed.

The article is correct in stating that is conveyed by bodily fluid contact. It is incorrect in saying that being in the same room with an Ebola patient with no precautions is safe. Bodily fluids include droplets, which are airborne, and the virus has been shown to be transmitted via airborne droplets in primates and is theorized in human outbreaks. Also, the virus can survive on contaminated surfaces, wet or dry.

It is airborne through droplets and has been shown to be passed in primate studies that way. It is also thought to occur human to human.

Just one bloody cough.

That is why droplet and fluid precautions are required - facemask, mouth and nose mask, outer infection covering, gloves, etc.

I would not be surprised if terrorists swallowed a time release capsule containing ebola and flew into the country, drove across The Canadian border, etc. with orders To head to not only the major population centers but smaller centers without the medical resources to deal with it. Once it kicked off from within the country THE NUMBER OF DEATHS WOULD BE MASSIVE. The economic disruption would be beyond calculation.

Oh gee. Nah. We’re safe. We protect our borders from third world invaders that might be infected with horrible diseases. Right? Yeah.

Yes, it will. Obama is inviting people to enter our country from 3rd world countries, with no screening. It will happen, because Obama facilitated it by demanding that our immigration laws not be enforced.

Yeah, they'll be coming here to see if they can get free treatment. And I'll tell you what: If I was a scumbag leader of a craphole country in Africa, I would spend the 2000 dollars, or whatever it costs, to fly my sick people to Stupidwhitemanland and get them the hell out of my country.
