Cephalexin for a sinus infection? Does she have anthrax or TB in her nose? That’s a pretty heavy-duty antibiotic for some boogers, ain’t it?

I once had a really bad sinus infection. This was around 1986. The Dr. tried Streptomycin and it didn’t work, then Cephalexin and it didn’t work. He then did a culture and next was Penicillin. Within two days I was practically well.

I could not believe how much more effective the penicillin was.

Are you thinking Cipro?

Cephalexin is just Keflex.

Kids get it for ear infections all the time.

Pretty mild drug, really.

My friend was given that drug for some innocuous something, I forget what. It knocked her body for a loop. Maybe the docs are using it casually?

Cephalexin (Keflex) tends to work well for MRSA sinus infections.

(And oh, by the way: it's likely that you have MRSA colonized in your sinuses, too. 85 to 90 percent of the population has it colonized somewhere, usually in the sinuses.)

Reactions to Cephalexin can be pretty nasty, actually. One that comes to mind (and that I have encountered with a patient) is actual detachment and sloughing off of skin. It can occur over the entire body, and patients who experience this are treated in burn centers. It can be lethal, and it is excruciatingly painful, in essence the same as being flayed alive. I would not wish that on anyone, regardless of how distasteful their life choices may be.

Other severe adverse effects are jaundice, coagulopathies (reduced clotting of blood), hemorrhaging, and liver failure.

Not if it’s not your first infection, particularly if you’re a singer and there’s a premium on keeping your respiratory tract and ears in good shape. I had chronic sinus and ear problems all through high school and this was one antibiotic of many that was used.
