Here's some terrible news to end the week: After a customer at Dominique Ansel Bakery posted a YouTube video yesterday featuring a mouse scurrying across the floor, guess who showed up this morning? According to a rep for the bakery, the Department of Health arrived this morning with four inspectors and promptly shuttered the business. So, what are cronut-seekers to do?
The rep says the bakery must now exterminate and re-cement the bakery's basement, then they have to await re-inspection. The goal is to be open by mid-day Monday but, as always, it's largely dependent on when the DOH will send an inspector to sign off on the repairs. In the meantime, Ansel and his team will still be onsite every morning to greet would-be cronut-seekers and let them know about the situation.
From the look of Ansel's last official DOH review which can't be linked to, but can be found here it seems at least some evidence of mice isn't new for the bakery (as is the case for probably every single restaurant in New York City), but at the time, the inspector gave the bakery an "A" grade:
ansel-grade Ansel's latest official DOH report.
So what's actually changed since October? Probably nothing, except the visibility of the mouse in the video, which unfortunately came out at almost the exact same time as this scene of rodents scurrying around a Dunkin' Donuts.
"We know people expect a lot of us," Ansel's rep told us. "We wish if a customer found something they would have just talked to us we would have taken care of it immediately."
Don’t they have BIG ones there?
I’ve never heard of a restaurant being shuttered because of a mouse. Violations issued, of course, with constant surprise visits from the Board of Health.
The Health Dept. of NYC - like all government institutions - is political. If the bakery has a powerful enemy, the Board of Health will descend like locusts. There is a certain club in NYC that has had a C rating for 6 months now and hasn’t been shuttered. It must have powerful friends.
With all the construction in NYC, mice are inevitable.
They must punish success.
There is a poster here I believe named Ansel except with two ls to make it Ansell, I think that is so.
Mice are an extremely sustainable source of protein. If they use them in their pastries they should get a Green Award.
I would be deeply surprised if there wasn’t a single person that hasn’t had a mouse scurry across the floor in their home!
Dang it...now we all have to move.
Mouse excrement on white glaze donuts could pass as chocolate sprinkles.
NYC has more rats than people. This is inevitable due to all the high density of restaurants and eating places. Food warehouses, butchers, food markets and so on. People gotta eat! Dittos for rats!
They were poppy seeds from the rolls.
Idiots!
Funny, most Restaurants in New York are full of Rats, but they come in the front door and pay for their food.
Years ago I was waiting for my friend to meet me. I was standing in front of some little deli and they had nuts and raisins, things like that, in bins in the window.
As I’m standing there I noticed a wee little mouse scurrying around in one of the bins. “Oh...so cute....little mousie....” I mused.
And then I was like: Hey! That’s not cute at all!
If would have been a rat then I would want to know where the mayor was at that time.
On my first trip to Lake Charles, Louisiana, I visited one home and there were lots of tree roaches scurrying around. I was appalled and my first thought was that those people must not have kept a very clean household. Then I moved there and dealt with reality. I really thought they were going to carry the house off, there were so many of them particularly after a rain, regardless of what I did.
Haven’t lived there for years but the thought of them just makes my skin crawl. It just one of those things you got used to if you lived there.
Worked for Sweeney Todd who then put on a hit B’way show. Mice are good for business.
NYC delis used to have cats patrolling the premises. The health Nazis soon got rid of those nasty predators!
Yes, every day in every way we see how stupid the leftist are.
Maybe the mouse was eating transfat.
No mention if the errant mouse was really scurrying home to the filthy abode next door either. It’s hard to get rid of pests if your neighbor either doesn’t care or seems to think of them as pets. I lived in a highrise in the metro NYC area. Ask me how I know this.
I don’t necessarily associate mice with dirt. I get mice in my house every fall. My cat generally takes care of them. When I lived in Manhattan, the building next door was taken down. The mice problem was rampant. It wasn’t over until everything was repaired and restored. Of course, mice droppings are unsanitary and chefs in restaurants have to be on top of things. The Health Dept. is brutal.
