Because I am a glutten for punishment I’ll be waiting for the extended edition. Yes the movie is ridiculously too long, but I want MORE dammit.

I just watched it on the plane.
Like most middle movies in a trilogy it was almost 100% exposition.
I agree with many there was no reason other than pure greed to make the smallest book in the series into a 3-parter.

I waited for the extended cut for the first one. Got the extended of the first 3, of course none of those were too long to start with.

Definitely a movie marathon if you watch all three... or all six (when the final movie comes out)!

I was hesitant about “The Hobbit”-—not being a Tolkien fanatic-—but the first episode was terrific. I can’t wait for the second one to be released. I actually wanted to see it in the theater, but it came out opposite “American Hustle,” and my wife wanted to see that, and that’s about all the movies I go to at a theater any more.

So when will Jackson do a decalogy (or more) of the Silmarillion? Maybe he can also film another few movies for Unfinished Tales, but leave the final editing and reshoots to his kids.

The Silmarillion is virtually unfilmable - the story would have to be broken down into at least 4 films. Whether it would be worth the trouble, or whether the films would make sense are an other question.

The Silmarillion would be a rough row to hoe — and Book of Lost Tales could last forever...

The Silmarillion is by structure a bunch of only generally related stories. It would be much like filming the Old Testament as “a movie.”
To: Sherman Logan
You could cover Beren and Luthien. You could do the story of Turin Turambar. You could do the Fall of Gondolin. That’s three good topics, but they’d all be pretty much in isolation. I think it would be hard to provide context and linking between films.
To: ClearCase_guy
I want to see “The Children of Húrin”. Of course Howard Shore would do the score.
