BMW Motorrad and Dainese to Cooperate on Motorcycle Apparel Airbags

BMW Motorrad and Dainese have announced they will cooperate in joint development of innovative motorcycle safety clothing for BMW Motorrad. Taking the Dainese D-Air® Protect System as its starting point, the partners will be developing motorcycle rider equipment with fully integrated inflatable protectors for BMW Motorrad.

The first product to emerge from their cooperation will be the DoubleR RaceAir one-piece leather suit with D-Air® racing protectors, designed exclusively for use on racetracks. The racing suit is scheduled to be presented at the international EICMA motorcycle show in Milan this November, once BMW Motorrad has completed all the required testing in Munich.

The next stage will be to develop the Dainese D-Air® Street System as a retrofit solution for BMW Motorrad. The system is scheduled to be launched in 2015, following successful completion of all crash tests. BMW Motorrad customers will then be able to retrofit an innovative safety system to their motorcycles.

BMW Motorrad and Dainese are also looking into further ways of cooperating in the interest of providing further protection for motorcycle riders.

Wearable Air Bags?

You first . . .

I knew Beemer riders were big on Rain Gear. This takes the accessory apparel idiom to a whole new level.

The MotoGP racers are wearing a similar setup, from Alpinestars.

Yeah, but that’s because....we ride in the rain!

There’s no such thing as bad weather. Only bad equipment.

I respect and admire the BMW riders maniacal devotion to riding in inclement weather. Long after the storm has chased me under a viaduct along comes an R90 rider wearing several thousands of dollars of rain gear, bonding with his/her ride in the cold and wet miserable conditions.

Sounds great for the racing industry.......but don't expect it to catch on with the Harley community who would rather wear dew rags than helmets.........

If you Google Harley Davidson Airbags you come up with something a little different . . .

Guilty as charged.

I’m certainly old enough to know better, but my excuse is that I’m too old and set in my ways to change now. Plus there’s the sunk cost of the Roadcrafter, the rain gloves, boots and electric vest that you want to amortize over as many miles as possible.

What has been seen.....

I was expecting something to do with air shocks, actually.

I did get the shock part right.

[OY! Her aching back!!]

nascarnation said it first. MotoGP and World Superbike racers have had access to this technology for a couple years now in Dainese D-Air suits.

It does not prevent all injuries, but I have seen several riders walk away from very big spills.
