Lythronax argestes (which literally means "Gore King from the Southwest") once stalked the shores of western North America in search of prey. It sported the same short snout, broad teeth, front-facing eye, and unimpressive forearms as Tyrannosaurus rex, which lived around 68 million years ago. (Related: "Did the Real T. rex Resemble the One in Jurassic Park?")

At 24 feet (7.3 meters) long and weighing about 2.5 tons, the 80-million-year-old Lythronax (pronounced LYE-thro-nax) lacked the even-more-massive size of T. rex, says the University of Utah's Mark Loewen...

In comparison, T. rex was about 40 feet (12 meters) long and about 15 to 20 feet (4.6 to 6 meters) tall...

The "King of Gore" tyrannosaur, unearthed in southern Utah, belongs to the same family as the famous Tyrannosaurus rex.

...western North America, then a separate continent called Laramidia that stretched from Alaska to Mexico, was an original home of the tyrannosaurs.

Haven’t scientist recently settled that T-Rex and its cousins were more great big scavengers rather than vociferous cold-blooded mega-predators? “King of Gore” doesn’t seem an apt title for what is essentially a great big, land-bound buzzard.

Just saying. Do these guys ever compare notes?

My guess is that the big ones were actually cold blooded and needed to eat about twice a year....

and mashed potatoes, haggis :-), gravy and pecan/pumpkin pie.

That map shows almost all of South Dakota under water, but “Sue” was found in South Dakota, and I don’t think the find-spot was the S.E. corner of the state.

Lovely ocean front property if you do not mind sharing the beach with T-Rex relatives. If you go for a swim watch out for the 50 foot mosasaurs.

Actually, the real title of this creature is “King Of All Gore.” Eventually, the title was shortened to King Al Gore. The Gores are the only remaining descendants of lizard people.
