I have not had the courage to attempt canning as of yet, - especially meat - although I did obtain the proper equipment. I’m hoping I can hook up with some ladies I know and see if they would walk me through some basics.

I’ll be happy if I can just fire up the dehydrator and get that going!

I did experiment with one of the cucs before the fridge died. I had lots of room in one of my favorite brand of pickles jars, and just sliced it into wedges and added it to the pickles in the jar. After a few days, I had one, and it was wonderful! (This is the kind of pickle that is refrigerable even before it is opened.)

I’m glad I did that, cause that’s all that is left of my cuc harvest. The others remain frozen in my hydrator. Haven’t tossed them, hoping that when I get the hydrator going I can dry them. But they might be too damaged. I don’t know. My store boughten yellow and zucchini froze too.

I did that recently and was happy with the results, also. After two weeks we tried them and they were getting pretty good, put them back and forgot about them for two months. Found them and tried them and they were about the best I ever had, very crunchy. Made some more for Christmas.

Blue Jay got my meezer a couple of weeks ago. She had an owie for a while, but she’s okay now.

We have always had the Stellars Jay and I though they were bad but the Gray Jays think they have unlimited IBT cards and they are not easily spooked so I’m taking my wrist rocket and a bag of marbles out there. My first day of rest and the sun finally came out...

I just got back from working on my land. That felt good! It’s been almost a month since I was able to get out there, every time I tried something came up. Even today I had to fight for it.

My plastic sheeting keeps blowing loose. I have both staples and heavy rocks holding it down. With the rocks it at least doesn’t blow as far, but still, it’s loose more often than it’s down. The grass and weeds are matted, but not dead like they were supposed to be. I think I’ll go back to woven landscape fabric, it’s the only thing I’ve tried that hasn’t blown away or disintegrated so far. It’s expensive, though, so my garden will have to grow more slowly than I wanted.

Last Saturday I had piles and piles of green tomatoes on my table, now it’s piles and piles of multicolor tomatoes. They’re slowly ripening, one by one. 2 of the bigger ones are ripe enough to use today, and mom’s been nibbling at the ripe grape tomatoes.

At some point I need to tear my dead runner beans off their tipi and dig up the potato bed, but my back hurts for now.

Is anyone else getting signs of a bad winter coming? This year’s nutfall has been ridiculous, I filled a grocery bag full of hickory nuts while practically sitting still! Same with the wild grapes, which haven’t borne fruit since I bought my land, until this year. And the woolly worms I’ve seen are all completely black.

Jackie Clay says her beavers are building their dams higher this year, which means they expect a lot of snow.

I think I still have that book. That was where I learned that wilderness survival was a real thing, not just some weird obsession that was 100 years out of date.

(I was 11. People kept telling me how dumb I was for wanting to learn how things were done without technology.)

Some tomato varieties root more easily than others. My nameless volunteer grape tomato roots at the drop of a hat. In fact, I've been propagating it by keeping one growing in my room year-round, and snipping off tips in the spring to plant.

On the other hand, nothing I have done has ever gotten my Climbing Triple-Crop cuttings to root, in any year that I've tried.

Collards have lots of iron, too, so if you have thick blood, you want to go easy on collards.

Now I'm going to have to try them.
(SO not a greens person!)

The frozen cukes might be kind of mushy when they thaw, but if you blend them up into a smoothie with a touch of honey added, it’ll feel great on a sore throat.

No I haven’t had spoon bread. I too experiment in the kithcen. A handful of this a pinch of that. Use up what’s in the refrigerator. Usually don’t even think about writing anything down.

Sometimes Hubby says that was one of the best ever-hope you wrote it down.LOL

Indeed. This is the time of the year when nice days are a gift to get something done besides bask in the sunlight.LOL

It’s a race to get ready for the winter.

Yes, I am getting that feeling. We have been rather spoiled for the last several winters, with the first hard freeze not until November, but this year, it happened this week.

Nut harvests tend to run in approximately 3 year cycles. So we load up while we can. Pick out the nutmeats during the next several months. Vaccum pack and put in the freezer.

Some we glaze and put into jars for Christmas Presents.
