Posted on 10/11/2013 12:29:02 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

I wonder if I could just pick off the stem, cut in half and dry them as is. Pick the seeds out later when I eat them?

You get so little out of the little ping pong ball size when you try to do anything but just eat them.

Weather here is very wet and miserable which is not good news for the project my friends are doing for me with our garden.

I am main carer for my father but I also work 30 hours a week so unfortunately we have had to give up our pigeons we stopped breeding about 3 or 4 years ago and the last one died just before Christmas.

We now have to get rid of the lofts and return the garden to grass along with tidying up the blackberry bushes and getting rid of garden material where a friend had pruned but not taking the cutting away.

We are having a series of bonfires and then arranged for the loft and nest boxes etc to be taken away and burnt.

The weather though has put a stop to this at present.

This is a photo from a few years back taken from neighhbour's garden when we were having new fence put up. The neighbours have just grass and on the left you can see the start of the lofts that have to come down

Too much water is as bad as not enough!

That’s a shame that you have to do that. We are also preparing to take down a shed on the property I mentioned up thread.

It was used as a quail hatchery. Now it’s crumbling and is an eyesore. No choice but to tear it down. It’s been in bad shape for a long while. It will improve the worth of the property.

We are still in the process of getting bids and hoping that we can afford to hire someone to do it. The city has taken our property into the city limits, so it is a wonder that they have not already sent us a letter from planning and zoning or the health department.

None of the neighbors has complained, but I am sure the majority will be pleased that they no longer have to look at it. The property used to overlook a field full of cattle.

However, some developer bought the field and built a bunch of cookie cutter homes on quarter acre lots. So I have a bout 7 homes facing the shed directly. I am amazed that people actually bought them with that shed as a view.LOL

I took care of my father during his final years. Those were precious times that I thank God for giving me. Though retired, I was spending lots of time on volunteer work, and managed to juggle things most of the time to do justice to both.

With Obama Care, I know that he would not have had that time. He got treatments that will now be prohibited past a certain age.

Indeed. I have killed more plants with overwatering than anything else.

We have pretty good equipment for the job.

I have a gravity table that I intend to put on line some day. Have ambitions of doing some selection improvement of varieties by helping natural selection.

Re: Tansy..I’ve seen it in the herb section of the nurseries (not box stores) around here. It’s usually by the yarrow, and other “ferny” looking herbs.

City around here gets a little happy with the chlorine. Rain water makes all the difference on starting seeds for me.

They do here as well. The water comes out of the Ohio, after all. But the seeds do not seem to mind. They seem far more sensitive to temperature, consistent moisture, light/dark. I never have difficulty with sprouts, either.

No “foul” here that I’m aware of, greeneyes. Sometimes, it’s *good* to be clueless.

Hopefully, I didn’t miss anything.

With Obama Care, I know that he would not have had that time. He got treatments that will now be prohibited past a certain age.

I know exactly what you mean I have had to fight for certain courses of action under our NHS and often the doctors hide behind what is best for the patient as reason for not doing something.

I managed though to get them to insert peg and we were then granted NHS funding for his care at home which means that it is classed as a medical need not social. This means that if the carers run over their allotted time as long as good reason is stated no questions asked and we do not have to pay any shortfall cost now.

Well, I just posted yesterday that I am very allergic to garlic and now I have an email from Burpee Seed of a flat shipping charge of $2.00 for all garlic shipments.
So, if you need garlic and a low shipping charge, go to Burpee.

“Curses and foul. I’m in mourning.”

I understand your mourning the roses. My rose garden filled my small garden area - we went to Tyler to get David Austin roses due to their strength again disease of all kinds. Every rose plant was a variation of the color pink - except one that wasn’t a David Austin. It was supposed to be pink with a yellow fringe - that plant insisted on producing solid yellow roses. All those expensive roses except two were killed by the heat in 2011 when it was 105-107 every day for maybe two months. I researched that and found in Arizona it’s called “scalded” plants when the sun/heat cooks the plants and kills them. You bet I was in mourning. I loved those beautiful roses.

I so like seeing pictures of your roses. Forget Johnny, he doesn’t get it with roses.
