Free Republic | 7/19/2013 | greeneyes

Posted on 07/19/2013 12:45:12 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

We almost got a pellet gun w/scope for me until Mr. Sg spotted the first hornworm. It’s been raining for a couple of hours now (profuse thanks up to the Creator!). Poor dog has been hiding in the coffee table because of thunder.

None of ours had wasp eggs, but thanks for telling us about them!

I'll take a knock out pill over a toothache any day.

When we first moved to this town, I got a toothache on a Friday night. I had not even established myself with a dentist yet, or a medical Dr. I called every one that had an internet listing that said they were open on Sat morning. After dozens of calls to dentist that were not open as advertised, I called one and got an answer, a real live person, his wife. Seems that the internet list had used his home phone. The dentist was at a grandson's football game. I told Mrs. Dentist my situation and a few minutes later the dentist called me and phoned in some meds and told me to call the office Mon morning and they would see me.

I don't still have the home phone number and they managed to remove it from the net. Poor planning on my part. But I am still using this dentist. Glad you survived the weekend and made it to the dentist ASAP Monday.

In San Antonio Caliche amended soil . . . just planted Chayo (Spinach Tree), a mango tree (which will probably not survive anywhere close to a frost) an Edwards Lemon tree, and in the middle of our backyard a one foot loquot tree.

Your mango would be better off in a huge pot that you can drag indoors. It won't survive winter in San Antonio. The Citrus is questionable. I have seen some citrus thrive in the San Antonio area while others die. The loquat......I hope you planted it in an out-of-the-way place. It will grow to about 20ft. The fruit are great also. On a separate note, I brought several loquat from the city that I grew from seed to plant on my farm. I had a first harvest in the spring of 2011 after the mild winter.

I don't know about the chaya or chayote (even though I have seen them is stores)

It hurts to walk, or even to sit in a regular chair. You wouldn’t think sitting uses your stomach muscles that much, but it does!

I can relate to that. You may be more comfortable in something like an easy chair where you can lean back and bring your legs closer to your chest top relieve tension on your abdominals.
Take it easy!

“If you want a c. moschata type ‘summer/zucchini’ squash try ‘tromboncino’(sp)” “My favorite squash! As winter squash they get sweeter the longer they’re stored, too.”

I ordered two envelopes of that seed and they came today - got them out of mailbox on way to dentist. I’m sending one of the envelopes to Johnny as soon as the pain in my jaw is low enough I can get out of the house again.

“I'll take a knock out pill over a toothache any day.”

The first extra strong pain pill sort of put me in a semi-sleep. During this day, the horrible pain keeps coming back and I put the heating pad on. Never in my life have I had this kind of horrible pain from a tooth and the swelling of my face and my pain threshold is high.

I hope this is better tomorrow but I think it will take three days of antibiotic to make a dent in this.

I've had another pain pill and think I am going into that semi-conscious state now which is better than all that pain.

Make sure that you don't go too far with the pain pills. We need your wit around here. Get better.

Hydrocodone makes a lot of people sleepy. It made me very chatty and social. While I had an infected nerve in my jaw, I would drive to work, take a pill, and then start making social rounds, which was not my usual pattern.Prople noticed...

Hope you are doing better, Marcella.

Wonder if an ice pack might help more than a heat pack? It would numb the area and also reduce the swelling.

Thanks for sharing. It all looks beautiful. We got a bunch of peppers, squash, cukes, green beans, garlic, and maters with a little blush in today.

I just finished canning a batch of pickles, and green beans.
Had a home grown tomato today, and it was soooo good.LOL

Nope. Think I’ll pass on that one. Hubby does have some old horse manure that he worked into his garden last fall. That was smelly enough for me.

Sorry for you Marcella. Haven’t been on the puter much last 3 days. Hope you are feeling better today and got to see the dentist.

When I have a toothache, I drink put cloves in water and boil it a little then pour it over a tea bag. Sometimes, I drink it, sometimes I make it really strong and just drop it onto the area that hurts.

Have also taken an aspirin and chewed it, so that it dissolves right on the area that hurts. I rarely have any of the stronger pain meds available.

There is also a tooth ache pain reliver called Kanka that tastes like crap, but helps.

These are the things I always keep on hand, because like you say, this stuff always happens on the weekend.

That reminds me, I need to remind Hubby to check his Bantam corn. DTM should make it just about ready. Maybe tomorrow, I’ll go out to the back forty and check his corn out myself.

I can’t stand stuff between the toe, so I order other styles. I bet they would have replaced them. I love mine, and I know the first pair lasted at least 10 years of hard wear.

I wear them all the time at home, and around town. Only place I didn’t wear them was to work at the bank.

Please post pictures. I am not familiar with the plants you mentioned, and so I don’t know the answers to your questions. Maybe someone else will know.

This tooth died inside the tooth plus it's the end tooth of a bridge so it's covered up, can't physically reach the tooth. There is no way to tamp down the pain except for pain pills and for an antibiotic to kill the infection. I knew that but tried a tea bag anyway and it was useless.

I wouldn't be able to get the jaw cold enough to interfere with the pain. If this were a SHTF situation, someone with a problem like this - the tooth being part of a bridge, would be in big trouble. Dentist is going to cut the bridge to separate the tooth from the bridge, but how would someone do that if there was no dentist?

I also discovered last night that the Cipro antibiotic bottle was only six pills and should be 20 - I'm short 14 pills. I just called the pharmacist (Walgreens) and guess what - a machine counts out the pills and the machine fouled up. The mental picture we have of a pharmacist counting out pills is no longer true - a machine does the counting.

My Walgreens is across the street so now some time today I have to go to drive-in window and pick up the rest of the pills. If I lived farther away from the drug store, this would be a problem. Do we need to count pills before we leave a drug store?

Did you know a machine is counting pills now?
