They're usually thought of as a brutish, primitive species.
So what woman would want to give birth to a Neanderthal baby?
Yet this incredible scenario is the plan of one of the worlds leading geneticists, who is seeking a volunteer to help bring mans long-extinct close relative back to life.
Professor George Church of Harvard Medical School believes he can reconstruct Neanderthal DNA and resurrect the species which became extinct 33,000 years ago.
His scheme is reminiscent of Jurassic Park but, while in the film dinosaurs were created in a laboratory, Professor Churchs ambitious plan requires a human volunteer.
He said his analysis of Neanderthal genetic code using samples from bones is complete enough to reconstruct their DNA.
He said: Now I need an adventurous female human.
It depends on a hell of a lot of things, but I think it can be done.
Professor Churchs plan would begin by artificially creating Neanderthal DNA based on genetic code found in fossil remains. He would put this DNA into stem cells.
These would be injected into cells from a human embryo in the early stages of life.
It is thought that the stem cells would steer the development of the hybrid embryo on Neanderthal lines, rather than human ones.
He says Neanderthals were not the lumbering brutes of the stereotype, but highly intelligent. Their brains were roughly the same size as mans, and they made primitive tools. Cloning the caveman: Geneticist Professor George Church

He believes his project could benefit mankind.
He told German magazine Der Spiegel: Neanderthals might think differently than we do. They could even be more intelligent than us.

Wanted: 'Adventurous woman' to give birth to Neanderthal man - Harvard professor seeks mother for cloned cave baby
Neanderthals have been extinct for 33,000 years, but George Church, a genetics professor at Harvard Medical School, believes he can bring them back with the help of a surrogate human mother.

Nephilim coming back. I believe it’s Biblically prophesied for the last days which we are definitely in. Goliath was one.
Why is this legal?
Lets suppose he has normal intelligence. Lets even suppose that his face isnt ape-like. Neanderthals had significantly different dimensions. Their forearms where shorter than their upper arms. Hes likely to be very ugly by anybodys standards. What will life be like for somebody whose nearest relative died 33,000 years ago? What will he think about those who created him and then put him in a world where he is the ugliest man alive. Even if he has a great personality, how will near universal rejection affect him? What happens when he wants to mate? What will his children look like? And, suppose he has no social consciousness at all? What if he isnt even close to human? What then? Just because you can do something does not mean you should.
He doesn’t need to bother....we have one already...
in the White House.
To quote the character Ian Malcolm from the same movie: scientists spend a lot of time asking can we, instead of should we.
It may not be, but when did that ever stop somebody from doing anything?..................
If they do figure out how to do it, they’ll discover the Neanderthal looks just like a normal human.
He could pull in 6 figures or more working for Geico.
Since we have supposedly common genetic characteristics, it would be more like crossing a horse with a zebra, which is common.
Or, it may be more like crossing a wolf with a dog which is also possible and has been done, since there is relatively little difference in DNA of dogs and wolves..........
... theyll discover the Neanderthal looks just like a normal NFL linebackers..................
Well, Neanderthal DNA is found in modern day 'humans'. But not all humans. Guess which humans don't have any Neanderthal DNA ?
Monsanto has crossed animal DNA with plant DNA and we're eating their inventions as food.
Wouldn't that, as you said, be like " trying to cross a cat with a dog?"
