I watched live the last award show for the top football collegian before the Heisman where all 3 were there and Te’o won that night over Manziel. The host started talking about how he felt about his “dead GF” and his grandmother passing away, and he talked about “both” of them. IMO, I think he knew about it..
Apparently the whole Notre Dame season was a hoax also. Pretty evident in the BCS title game.

This whole gf deal was part of his publicity runup to the Heisman balloting. He was a full, knowing participant. ND spent millions promoting this moderately better than average football player as some kind of superhero and he was happy to play along.
