Berlusconi babes fight as coalition looks shaky (Berlusconi's a pimp)
UK telegraph ^ | Nov 27, 2010 | Nicky Squires

He famously once declared that Left-wing Italian women were less attractive than their Right-wing counterparts. But having proved his point by packing his government with ex-beauty queens and showgirls, Silvio Berlusconi is discovering that good looks do not necessarily go with good tempers.

In the latest crisis to hit the scandal-ridden prime minister, his tottering centre-right coalition is under threat after a vicious catfight between two of his most glamourous female allies.

In one corner is Mara Carfagna, 34, a former topless model who Mr Berlusconi - without any apparent sense of irony - appointed equal opportunities minister two years ago. And in the other is the fiery Alessandra Mussolini, 47, an MP who is not only the grand-daughter of the fascist dictator but also the niece of Sophia Loren. The trouble started when Miss Mussolini, herself a former actress and two-time Playboy cover girl, took a photo on her mobile phone of Miss Carfagna talking in parliament to Italo Bocchino, a member of a group of rebel MPs who have split from Mr Berlusconi's coalition.

Silvio has learned that when you hire a Cabinet like he has, you can indeed insert thy rod in thy staff.

I like Berlusconi..how many world leaders could actually say “right wing women are more attractive than left wing women” or “I’ve always liked attractive women, good thing I’m not a homosexual”. and get away with it?

Hey, Italy is the country that invented orgies. Just carrying on a 2000-year old tradition. The ironic thing is that most of these ladies were probably raised in good, Catholic households.

Why did this make me think of Shrillary and the Wookie?? Wonder what they call each other in private? "una vajassa" could be suitable for both, though perhaps a bit on the gentle side compared to reality.

una vajassa.... The slur had Italians running to their dictionaries, where they found that it loosely translates as "screeching fishwife" - the kind of strident, pugnacious woman who hails from Naples' notoriously rundown, Mafia-ridden Spanish Quarter.

Do not think that the Mussolini family are all that good as Catholics (although Benito did arrange for the Vatican to be sovereign).

“Do not think that the Mussolini family are all that good as Catholics (although Benito did arrange for the Vatican to be sovereign).”

The 1929 Vatican Concordat was mainly for political reasons. BM was an atheist from what I’ve heard. Keep in mind that he had once been active in left-wing politics.

To be fair, many people identify with a religion for political or cultural reasons without seriously following its teachings. This is particularly a common practice in Europe.

It was a lot less true in Italy 80 years ago.

Anti-clericalism was actually widespread in Italy a century ago. If you would have visited my ancestral village at that time, you would notice that it was the women who attended Church, while the men hung out or stayed home.

Mussolinis father was an Atheist and Socialist, who named his son after Benito Juarez.

‘Anti-clericalism was actually widespread in Italy a century ago’

I know that, but ‘anti-clericalism’ is not the same as not having religious values, it was opposition to social leadership by the clergy. Since Mussolini started out as a leader of the socialist left, his dad’s ideas are not surprising. Didn’t know about the Juarez connection though.
