California Judicial Election Help

California Judicial Elections

Judicial and school elections have no party affiliations in California, which can make it somewhat difficult to determine who's decent and who's a lousy Communist mole.

In looking at my Tulare County sample ballot I see the following names up for judicial elections. Any opinions?

Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye
Ming W. Chin
Carlos R. Moreno
Brad R. Hill
Jennifer Detjen
Chuck Poochigian
Bert Levy

And these names for State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Larry Aceves
Tom Torlakson

And these names for Board of Education Member Trustee Area 2

Rod Burkett
Deborah Lynn Holguin

The propositions and politicians are easy to decide on. These judges are far more insidious and secretive.

Look to see who is backing or endorsing them.

Google is also a source.

Poochigian ran against Jerry Brown in 06. I don’t know about the other names on that list.

You will be wise to vote “No” on all judges unless you know them or of them personally. The reason we have so many bad judges and they stay on the bench for their entire lives, is people go into the voting booth knowing nothing about them and vote “yes.” To do that is beyond stupid.

And any other elections and items on the ballot you know nothing about it is best to leave them blank.

Before the 2000 election debacle in Florida, I was under the impression I had to make a choice on every single item on the ballot. Because of all those hanging chads and certain people trying to imply a vote when none was there, I learned a lot about how to vote.

I must have made some terrible mistakes before that time but I try not to think about it. Now, if I don’t know, I either leave it blank or vote no (which is usually a safe vote—not always, but usually). Like right now, I know nothing about any of the city council members so I’m leaving that blank unless I learn something in the next couple weeks.

We’re all in the same boat.

Vote NO on all of them. Judge ships in California are a favorite payoff to defeated or termed out politicians

Yes indeed, especially since the "plan" is to destroy American Constitutional government by way of the judiciary. It's succeeding quite well to this point.

I have the same question. Does anyone have input on the following: Robert M. Mallano, Victoria G. Chaney, Jeffrey W. Johnson, Judith M. Ashmann, Walter Croskey, Steven Suzukawa, Orville "Jack" Armstrong, Paul H. Coffee, Steven Z. Perren, Laurie D. Zelon, Frank Y. Jackson, Tricia A. Bigelow or Elizabeth Annette Grimes?

These are terribly important offices and I can find almost nothing about these judicial candidates.

I know most personally and they are all excellent.

Oh, this is great! Tell us about them... here's the list to make it easier for you:

Supreme Court
* Carlos Moreno
* Ming Chin
* Tani Cantil-Sakauye

Justice, California State Court of Appeal; District 4, Division 1
* Judith McConnell

Justice, California State Court of Appeal; District 4, Division 2
* Carol Codrington
* Manuel Ramirez

Justice, California State Court of Appeal; District 4, Division 3
* David Sills
* Eileen Moore
* William Bedsworth--This guy I've heard speak and read his (occasionally) hilarious columns. He's a very nice person but again, he thinks he knows better than the law of the land and likes to legislate from the bench.

Anyway, since you know them personally, tell us all about them, and I'm especially interested in your thoughts on Justice Bedsworth since that's the only one I personally know anything about and I would not vote for him.

I'd be interested in your take then. Since they don't have party affiliation there's nothing about them in the GOP voter's guides.

There should be an easier way to get a feel for how those judges think. I'm not someone who spends his time following the careers of judges, and I know zero about these people. Which means I'll most likely vote no on all of them.

The voter’s guide doesn’t list these people because they have no official party affiliation.

These names were not on the original post. I know Justice Mareno well and have worked with him. Good justice. I know Justice Chin - one of the very best in the USA (VN vet - Rep). I don’t know the new Chief Justice, but have heard nothing bad. Div 4 is San Diego/OC, and I don’t know them other than by reputation. I’ve heard nothing to justify voting against them. If they are defeated the new CA governor will appoint the replacement. You don’t want to see a Brown appointee.

Would it have killed you to have scrolled to page 2?

Make sure you know the truth about the two candidates running for Tulare County Supervisor District 4:

Steve Worthley
· A lifelong resident of district four.
· Successful businessman and respected community leader.
· A true conservative who has worked hard to keep Tulare County fiscally strong through tough times.
Learn more at: www.SteveWorthley.Net

Brian Rouch
· Has rented a home in district 4 for less than one year.
· Has never operated a successful business.
· Supports big brother, big government, policies such as requiring residents of district four to pay no less than $4 per gallon of gas to limit consumption.
· A Green Party member, then a Democrat , then in 2010 registered as Decline to State.
· Has publicly lied about his past work for radical groups, such as the Sierra Club, who are responsible for killing jobs in
the 4th District.

State Superintendant of Public Instruction candidates Torlakson and Aceves are both Democrats. The SF Chronicle has
a decent review of both of them at: http://articles.sfgate.com/2010-06-10/bay-area/21904382_1_superintendentlarry-
aceves-romero-vote-count. However, DIANE LENNING is the ONLY Republican candidate that has qualified as a
WRITE-IN CANDIDATE. To vote for her you will have to WRITE-IN ”Diane LENNING" ON the BALLOT, for the office
Superintendent of Public Instruction. Although she has a slim chance of winning at least by writing her in you can vote
conservative.

Judicial recommendations synopsis is below, but you can also go to
http://judgevoterguide.com/research/nov2010/supreme-court-judges-others.pdf for discussion on the CA supreme
court judges.
 Chief Supreme Court – Cantil-Sakauyb
A moderate Republican. Appointed by
Schwarzenegger.
 Assoc. Supreme Court – Chin
A moderate Republican appointed by Pete
Wilson.
 Assoc. Supreme Court – Moreno
Appointed by Gray Davis. Vote No.
 Presiding Appellate – Hill
Appointed by Schwarzenegger.
 Assoc. Appellate – Detjen
Appointed by Schwarzenegger. Republican.
 Assoc. Appellate – Poochigian
Appointed by Schwarzenegger. Conservative
Republican. Vote YES
 Assoc. Appellate – Levy
Appointed by Pete Wilson. Republican.
There. You're welcome.

There's no such thing as "Page 2" at the link you provided. But thank you for the new information.

Yinz-r smokin' crack.

There are "Pages 2s" at both links I provided to you, but I was referring to Page 2 of the first link I gave you -- which countered your initial assertion that "The voter’s guide doesn’t list these people because they have no official party affiliation."

In fact those people are listed. On page 2.

No to Carlos Moreno.

Moreno voted to overturn Prop 22 (traditional marriage statute) and was the only CA SC justice to vote against Prop 8 (traditional marriage amendment). IIRC, he also is weak on the 2nd amendment.

One site I found with recommendations was
http://governmentforthepeople.us/2010_General_Election.html
I am not familiar with that site, and you may or may not agree with their reasoning (there's very little information on most of the judges).

I know most of these judges also. Carlos Moreno is pleasant and dissents a lot, meaning he is not afraid to take a side; Ming Chin Chin is well-balanced so seems fair; Tani Cantil-Sakauye is the new appointed Chief Justice taking over for Chief Justice George;she is out of Los Angeles, so I don’t know her, but if she is Chief Justice George’s pick, she’s a good one. All I know about Judith McConnell is she has a great sense of humor and is very pleasant and friendly (very down to earth); Carol Codrington is the governor’s new appointment to Riverside, she is said to be a hard worker and also down to earth; Manuel Ramirez is a tyrant and an egomaniac—the amount of taxpayer money he has spent decorating and furnishing his courthouse in Riverside is obscene; David Sills is or was very ill, so is hardly ever at “work”; I don’t know Eileen Moore’s work in the appellate court, but she was a good superior court judge, so...; I don’t know William Bedsworth except I too have read his articles and he is very entertaining, but talks over ones head.
