Belgian archaeologists have unearthed a 3,500-year-old pharaonic official's tomb that had disappeared under sand in southern Egypt after it was first discovered about 130 years ago. Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities said in a statement Sunday that the Belgian team in Luxor uncovered the tomb of Amenhotep, the deputy seal-bearer for King Thutmose III who ruled Egypt in the 18th Dynasty.

The tomb was first discovered in 1880 by Swedish Egyptologist Karl Piehl, but it was later buried under sand until the Belgian team found it again this year.

But they won't be allowed to explore it because they didn't mention Zahi Hawass in this article.

Amenhotep. Isn’t he the one who is the center of all “The Mummy” legands?

Thanks for this - I have been fascinated by Egyptian history ever since becoming familiar with the amazing work of Bob Brier. What a teacher that guy is!

Just wish that the original news item had more details or a link. When they say that the wall inscriptions had been “heavily damaged,” do they mean in the past 130 years, or prior to the original discovery? And damaged by what? Luxor isn’t subject to the same rare but destructive flash floods that you find in the Valley of the Kings.

Well, it’s a great news item to use as a jumping-off point.

Whenever we get too wrapped up in the immediacy of contemporary politics, it does us good to remember the 5000 years of Egyptian history. It seemed to the 18th Dynasty that Egypt had been, and would be, the height of civilization forever and ever.

Whatsa "legand"? Is that a burial bisquet?

That's how I spell "legend" when I'm tired. And what kind of word is "Whatsa?"
