Windows market share dives again as Mac nears 10%

Second record loss in two months for Microsoft; Apple posts record gain

Windows lost nearly a full percentage point of market share for the second month in a row in December, pushing Microsoft Corp.'s operating system to a new low, an Internet measurement company reported yesterday.

Meanwhile, Apple Inc.'s Mac OS X posted a record gain that brought it close to a 10% share for the first time since Net Applications Inc. began tracking operating system use.

In December, 88.7% of the people who browsed the Web sites that Net Applications monitors did so using machines powered by Windows, a 0.94 percentage point drop from November. The slide was Windows' largest in the four years that Net Applications has collected operating system data, and the second record-setting monthly loss in a row for Microsoft's software.

I was at the Apple store in Manhattan (near Central Park) - it was a madhouse...

Apple has brought fun back to computing - it reminds me of the days of the Atari 800 and Commodore 64, except that now it’s “normal” people and not just us tech heads who are enjoying the fun..

I don’t think I’d ever see as many people at a Gateway store or Dell Kiosk as I saw at the Apple store today..

I use Windows and Windows tools (C#, .NET, etc) for a living, but when I buy my next computer for home use, it will be an Apple..

I blame Vista

I do too, with first hand experience. Last December my MIL bought a new laptop. Couldn't find one with XP on it (she wanted to buy local, not online). Ended up with a MacBook from the Apple store-within-a-store at Best Buy.

This Christmas, wanted to buy a new computer for my oldest son (vanity/brag, 4.17 GPA due to straight As in AP and honors classes). He wants/needs a laptop because he has school work even over breaks when we like to travel. Again, no interest in Vista (wife has to use it at work and hates it). Also sick and tired of the MS BS, security holes, viruses, DRM nightmares, etc. Hence son got a new MacBook.

Thus, in my personal experience Vista is the prime reason OS X is eating Windows market share. Me, I'm a Linux guy. I wouldn't boot Vista if you paid me, literally.

This is surely the domestic US Market.

In the Asian markets Microsoft is lagging, while Gates and Co, can get US rags like Fortune magazine to claim windows has 90 percent market share in china - Chinese sources paint a view of more like 30 to 55 percent for windows.

New Mac user as of Christmas.

Constant Crashes under iwork. Downloading updates as we speak. Safari also chokes on web sites as frequently as IE, which I did not expect with OS X.

I bought this machine so my wife wouldn’t need help with the computer, she’s taking classes at the Apple store but so far, she is still having problems.

She still loves her Mac but I still don’t get it. But then again, I turned off the Vista special effects because I thought they were distracting.

I have never gotten iWork to crash. Safari chokes about once every thirty hours or so and its usually some BS crap-code site that does it.

This from an ex Apple evangelist. I lost faith when they started to turn their Pro line into a consumer product.

And maybe 15% of copies are actually paid for!

Installed AppleTV last week. Worth every penny. I see a very serious split coming soon between content providers and distributors. Like AM radio there may be new life for broadcast TV at the expense of cable and satellite. I am very surprised that Apple has not marketed this device more aggressively.

I just hooked up my sister in law’s formerly Windows family with a Mac Mini. They needed a home computer that they could buy here and take back to Austria conveniently. We were all in Ft. Lauderdale at the same time, so I took them into the Apple store in the Galleria. They picked up an Apple TV, too. I took them through the basics at the hotel, and it looks like they are good to go!

I'm sorry you are having such issues. They do NOT represent the experiences of the numerous Mac users I know and support. I think your machine has a hardware problem that is unrelated to OS X. I have never experienced a crash of any iWork application and while there are some web pages that are Windows only, my experience is that 99.9% of webpages are now pretty much Mac compliant.

Have Mrs. Doc take her computer to her Apple class and show them what websites are choking. Let the Geniuses look at the crashes of iWork.

Apple does have its quirks. I never liked Safari so I use Firefox. It works like a charm. I prefer to let the pioneers take the arrows so it helps to keep an eye on MacFixIt before major updates.

Yes, sounds like a hardware problem. I’d check the RAM for sure.

Or send it back and get a new box.

I never tried iWork but as a long-time Mac user I'll agree that Macs aren't perfect.

Firefox is better than Safari and runs great on a Mac.

Also don't work in your admin account. Set up a user account and work in that.

While in your admin account, though, you might want to run disk utility especially if you have just download some updates.

With their troubles with the public's shunning of Vista, Microsoft has more to worry about than just Apple.

On the horizon is the new Android OS by Google, which is now out on the G1 mobile phone, with more phones slated to be released with the OS this year.

Some techies managed to successfully get the Android OS up and running on a netbook in just 4 hours. Shades of the future, perhaps? ... FR thread with story here.

I do not think it is a hardware problem, I did a google search, the iwork crashing issue is discussed on multiple forums. Mrs. Doc finished the updates after I went to bed last night. I’ll find out how iwork is working later this morning. I’m hoping that I’ll have things fixed today. I haven’t had a windows problem that google and I couldn’t fix, I’m not letting the worlds easiest computer get the best of me. The geniuses are 45 miles away and I really don’t expect to need their services.

This was not an occasional blip, ipage was crashing so frequently that she couldn’t finish a page. My daughter who loves Mac and uses it at school everday thought that was normal behavior for ipage. Apparantly the technology teacher instructs the student to save every five minutes while they are doing their typing at school because of frequent crashes.

I have to admit that once I found the update feature on OS X, it was slick, every available update for all installed software in one spot. Unfortunately the whole reason for buying a Mac for Mrs. Doc was so that I would not be looking for upgrade features in the middle of the night.

I was not aware that there were windows only web pages. Interesting concept, I’ll have to look into that.

The problem is ipage specific. Does not appear to be a hardware problem.

As I mentioned before, after buying the program, my daughter told us, the school is having the same problem.

A google search also reveals the same problem. They recommend a clean install of OS X. I’ve had to do clean installs of Windows in the past but not since XP was released. Now when a computer gets to the point where a clean install is needed, I buy a new computer. It’s usually 3-4 years old and I want a new HD, DVD drive and faster processor anyway.

The computer is less than two weeks old, we haven’t had enough time to crap up the install yet.
