Net Applications' Operating System Market Share for December 2008:

Net Applications' Operating System Market Share Trend for Apple Macintosh for January 2007 to December 2008:

More details can be seen via Net Applications' here.

MacDailyNews Note: As always, the actual percentage numbers are not as important as the trends shown since all "market share" reports have unique measurement sources. Net Applications, for example measures 40,000 corporate and ecommerce websites — how many of which are restricted to WIndows and/or IE, if any, we do not know. If anything, Net Applications is providing one measure of installed base, rather than "market share." Again, what's important is the trend (and consistent data points). The trend shows Apple's Macintosh ascending.

Apple OS share is rising because of Psystar and other clone sales and Hackintoshs.

You have got to be kidding me. That's literally a drop in the bucket compared to Apple sales.

Look at it this way
Safari browser use is up partly because of the Psystars, Hackintoshes and other clones floating around. Windows users too who have no intention of buying an Apple computer

I'm pretty sure their total is within the margin of error of the survey.

And yet Vista has more than twice the market share.

-— Blessed are the clone makers -—

You are beholden to the clone makers to boost the Safari ratings

The last time there were Mac clones, the marketshare went through the floor.

Apple is entering perilous times. Many who love Apple will simply not be able to afford them and will go buy Windows machines or do without

I think Apple has been mostly doing all the right things. They have tiered their systems well for the most part, made the operating system work seamlessly with the hardware, moved to the Intel platform, and increased their visibility through their retail store push. They also released Safari and iTunes on the Windows platform. Their iPod and iPhone lines seem to be doing very well also.

Their problem will always be in the entry level, and while small, lesser-featured laptop "netbooks" are pushing the price boundary down, Apple is, and probably will continue to be absent from. Linux has hope here, but there has to be standardization (and an app store?) before it can take off.

The Psystar boys are breathing life into a tired old brand. You should be thanking them and inviting them to replace Steve Jobs as keynote speaker. Plus they are bi-lingual, can deliver it in Spanish too

My prediction is that within two two years Apple will keep the upper tier but will authorize Psystar to make and sell entry level Apple desktops so they can compete with Dell for students

I think you've reduced to simple trolling now. OS X in standard boxes? Not exactly breathing new life into a brand.

Apple is 24th in brand value in the world, worth over 13 billion dollars (just the brand name alone, not the company). That's up from about 9 billion and 39th place in 2006. It's 8th in the electronics industry, behind the likes of Microsoft, IBM and Nokia and ahead of Sony, Dell and eBay. Overall they're even ahead of Nike and Pepsi.

Apple won't go low-end because they can't guarantee the quality, product cohesiveness and marketing that goes with the brand, and that would reduce brand value. A point or two in marketshare means nothing if it doesn't come with extra value or profit.

You’re fruitier than a nut cake. Paystar has barely sold a handful of machines. Anybody that would by a computer out of a Miami warehouse is insane.

Yup, and despite people like dennisw’s rabid desires and psychotic delusions to the contrary, going downmarket has been a total failure 99% of the time.

Just ask Mercedes. They’re *still* in serious trouble over going downmarket. Or Cadillac, for that matter. Anyone else remember the Cimarron?

Is some new version of it about to come out in 2009?

Rumor has it that way... but we have to wait for Tuesday to move it from the rumor column to the it's happening column.

Am an Apple gadfly and muck raker
And anytime I write Psystar you can read that as codeword that also includes all up and coming clone makers and Hackintoshs...... Like it or not they bring the inevitable to Apple. Cheap Apple OS available to the proles that Stevie has so much contempt for

It will be "too the moon" ....  Once the gag order is lifted and the court rules against the 1984 like Apple Leviathan
The gag order is what keeps Los Hermanos Psystar from selling their clone tech to other up and comers who want in on the action. Money is tight and these young & hungry entrepreneurs are going to stand the Apple paradigm on its head within two years. Matter of fact Stevie should be standing on his head and doing some yoga for his health

All car makers are in trouble. Overcapacity and lack of money to buy luxury brands like Mercedes and Apple. Apple can either learn from the Psystar boys or it is headed for quarterly losses. The proles want Apple but can't afford them
I see the huge market there that you and cousin Stevie are blind too

We are in a serious deflation now verging on depression
You have to re-tool your attitude
More importantly, uncle Stevie has to

There will always be people to buy Apple's goods even if the market shifts lower. What matters is profit, not marketshare. Apple is doing very well despite the recent downturn in the economy, definitely getting hit far less than most other companies.

While I like the Smart car, it's still been a money loser for Mercedes. The A-class was a disaster, skimping on engineering resulting in the first Mercedes that was unsafe straight off the lot. Even Mercedes has noticed the downturn in its quality and engineering and recently spent a huge amount of money to bring its cars back to their former quality and restore the brand name.

There is no "gag order." Everything that is being done in court is being published as soon as it's done. So far, the court has ruled against everything that Psystar has tried.
