A strong earthquake was felt throughout all of Puerto Rico, with the strongest intensity in the town of Las Piedras, where the Seismic Network reported damage. The quake had an intensity of VI according to the Modified Mercalli Scale which measures earthquakes on a scale of I to X. Those measuring VI are characterized by a strong quake with a potential to cause slight structural damage.
"At the moment of generating this bulletin damage has been reported; additional reports of minor damage can be expected considering the size and location of this earthquake," the Seismic Network reported on its Internet page.
The earthquake was reported at 6:40 AM [Atlantic Time] on latitude 19.282 degrees north, longitude 64.832 degrees west. It was located 137 kilometers northeast of Fajardo, at a depth of 26 kilometers.

That’s right over the Puerto Rico Trench!!!! SHIT!!!!!
It was interesting to read some of the comments by Puerto Ricans on that report. A number of them thanked the ants for warning people ahead of time that the quake was coming.
Must be all of the early risers, since the quake was at 641AM local time.
LOL. I’m only going by what the respondents said. Maybe “las hormigas rojas” (red ants) crept into their beds and bit them.
What did the ants do exactly? And how would the population have known that what the ants were doing was a ‘code’ of an impending earthquake?
The ants may have come out of the ground to escape being smothered by collapsed tunnels. Before the great eruption of Mt. Pelee on the Island of Martinique in 1902, foot long biting centipedes and poisonous snakes descended on the cities and towns near the volcano causing a number of deaths.

My father lives on the 17th floor of a building near Old San Juan, Puerto Rico and he was still in bed at the time the quake struck. It was about 6:40 a.m., and the bed was shaking so hard that he thought it was his dog, Cookie, just playing around (which she does often in the mornings to wake him up.) But then he opened his eyes and saw that Cookie was still in her little bed on the floor, sleeping. My Dad got up and saw stuff falling off his drawer set. He said that the building was swaying.
However, my grandmother (who is 97 years old) lives on the 19th floor of the same building and said she didn’t feel a thing.
The building is about 1/4 of a mile from the Atlantic Ocean, so if there’s ever a huge earthquake in that area that would cause the North American Plate and the Caribbean Plate to brush against each other, that would cause a massive tsunami because of all the water within the Puerto Rico Trench that would amass and would have nowhere to go.

I guess the ants were surging out of the ground in large numbers. Who really knows what happened? I sure wasn’t there.
reading the comments closer it appears that a number of people keep ants and moths in water tanks (contadors). When these critters started get excited, the residents were forewarned. At least that’s what a number of them said. Sounds crazy to me.
