Business Week ^ | September 5th | by Aaron Ricadela

The carefully crafted ecosystem of tech companies built around Microsoft's Windows operating system is showing signs of strain. Hewlett-Packard, a longtime Microsoft ally, has quietly assembled a group of engineers to develop software that would make Windows Vista easier to use, or bypass some of its more onerous features. A Skunk Works of engineers at the company is even angling to replace Windows with an HP-assembled operating system, sources say.

HP to make their own OS? Possibly even built around linux?

And of course, because of this vista mess Apple is gaining market share too. Good.

I love competition; especially with the apple corps.

How many OS’s do they own now? There’s HP-UX, Dec Unix, Dec VMS, and Tandem Himalaya for starters. Plus Compaq was the biggest seller of both Novel and SCO when I worked there. They might be able to field something competitive if they decide to.

Excellent. As people start to use alternative OS’s like Linux, OS X, and whatever HP fields, they will realize they don’t need Microsoft’s garbage.

And, it may even make Windows more competitive.

All good things for the consumer.

I never understood Microsoft’s “partners”. They get screwed over by MS so often, they must have battered woman’s syndrome.

Heh heh......... So what’s one more! :-)

From the second link, it would seem that HP might just be stepping up the driver development in linux. Which is good either way.

I think that is good.. It would bring down the price of a computers imho. Most of the cost I think it is due to the Windows OS...

How much lower do you need to bring a $400 computer?

Do you always enjoy paying more than something is worth? If they can strip off crummy Vista and drop the price 100-200 bucks, how great would that be? You can put whatever you want on it, maybe even something you ALREADY own.

“If they can strip off crummy Vista and drop the price 100-200 bucks, how great would that be?”

The computers are priced based on what someone will pay, not what the cost of the OS is.

“You can put whatever you want on it, maybe even something you ALREADY own.”

You can already do that, just buy a clone at any one of a thousand online dealers.

As far as I know OEMs have always had the right to modify Windows to suit their needs. Many have done so. Which is why if you own a Dell, or HP, etc., and call MS with a Windows issue they’ll tell you to call the company that built your computer.

If HP thinks they can modify Vista to make it more palatable to a broader market, more power to ‘em.

My “last” PC laptop fried on latest business road trip.

I was sick and tired of corrupt drivers, wireless cards malfunctioning, continual reboots. My HP printer still spits extra paper out when finishing a printing job... not to mention the numerous times I have to slam the lid down in order to get the dreaded “Top Cover Open” window closed.

I am the proud owner of a 2-week old MacBook Pro. I have discovered that the dark side over in Apple country is much, much brighter than in Bill Gatesland.

Sorry, Seinfeld.

I have a new HP Compaq, and man, is it wonky. I can't copy & paste, and the pointers are wonky (among other things). I'm about ready to consider it a $1000 loss and get something else.

And just try calling Customer Support and dealing with an incomprehensible Indian accent. One time that I called - seriously, I'm not exaggerating, I could not understand ONE WORD of what she was saying. But I understand now why they have Indian Customer Support - it's to discourage people from calling.
