Best thing I've read here so far. I built my own PC from the ground up last year, and it has be the best, most reliable computer I've ever owned.

Because we both know where the drivers come from ;-) Of course, Mac people don't have to worry about such things with a closed system.

HP to make their own OS? Possibly even built around linux?

If HP creates a high-quality desktop operating system based on Linux, I would seriously consider purchasing it. But it would require a huge commitment of their corporate resources - hundreds of software engineer, at least $1 billion of R&D, and at least three years of work. That's what it would take to have a viable desktop competitor for Windows and Mac OS X. I hope they'll do it, but so far they haven't given any roadmap of their plans.

It is. It’s not hard to make a computer in which the OS can over double it’s cost.

^^^^^^^^^^^^How much lower do you need to bring a $400 computer?^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

How does $300 sound? $200? $150? $99? Why pay more than you have to?

Next time I go to get a new computer, I’ll have to come look you up. :-)

^^^^^^^^^^^As far as I know OEMs have always had the right to modify Windows to suit their needs.^^^^^^^^^^

And

^^^^^^^^^^^If HP thinks they can modify Vista to make it more palatable to a broader market, more power to ‘em.^^^^^^^^^

I don’t think any OEM has ever had to modify any previous windows OS to make it more user friendly, have they? Any time I’ve ever used a ‘white box’ copy of XP, 2k, 95, and so on vs an OEM(Dell, HP, etc) copy of windows, there isn’t a huge difference in windows itself, it’s always been added stuff such as office type stuff, little goodies and nic nacs added, games, and so forth.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^Mostly because of MSNBC and Olbermann, I’m going back to Mac.^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

LOL!! What does *that* mean?

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^I still don’t see the problem with Vista. It works great for me.^^^^^^^^^^^^

And

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^For the record, I am running a Lenovo 3000 N100 laptop with 2 1.8 gig duel core and 2 gig of memory.^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

That’s why it’s fast. “Made for Vista” hardware is required because the OS is just way too bloated.

Put Michael Moore’s fat arse into a maserati and the car is still fast! LOL

^^^^^^^^^^^^^That and hopefully a slick OSX like Windows Manager.^^^^^^^^^^^^

You should download one of the Suse 11.1 live KDE4 beta’s sometime. It’s already here.

To: Halfmanhalfamazing; All

All I can do is this.. I build a laptop (if I wanted to) for around $300.. All I need is the basic essentials and then get a good Linux OS and then I have a laptop..

The point is that products are priced based on what people will pay. But go ahead and look me up, I have a highly overpriced computer based on proprietary hardware running a slightly tweaked OS that you can basically get for free but will sell you at highly inflated prices. But hey it looks cute so it must be great.
