TALLAHASSEE - At least five residents from The Villages have contracted the coronavirus through community spread or close contact with someone else who had the virus, according to the Florida Department of Health in Sumter County.
The Villages is a rapidly growing retirement community of more than 50,000 residents that spans three north central Florida counties. Most of the community is in Sumter County, where 29 people have tested positive for the virus as of Friday.
At least 16 of the 29 residents who tested positive had contracted the virus while traveling, and another eight residents remained under investigation.
Five residents either became infected through the community, or after having close contact with someone who also tested positive, Megan McCarthy, a DOH Sumter County spokesperson, said.

I live 10 miles from the villages. Although 5 cases is considered spreading?
Weve got it in an assisted living facility near me. Not good. North Atlanta suburbs.
Have they started the migration north yet?
50,000
29 tested positive...TESTED, not sick...Tested
What the hell are we doing?
Canadians yes. They were forced to. A few did go up north but most are staying put for now. Id imagine majority will not be snowbirds this year.
Fake news. The Villages is probably more populated than that...WAY more than that. ZIP codes for The Villages, FL are- 32159 (original), 32162 and 32163 with a fourth being necessary in the near future.
50000 in the villages , 5 tested positve. ???? how many tested
93400 population in Sumter county , 29 tested positve how many tested???
Figure more like 80,000 people, plus others who work there somewhere, indoors and outdoors. The vast majority of residents are 55+ years old. Three ZIP codes...That has to be more than 50,000, even with all the golf course acreage.
I lived in Tavares 87-89 and it was a great place to live Easter to Thanksgiving but a horrible mess Thanksgiving to Easter. I can’t imagine what it must be like now.
Is COVID-19 out pacing gonorrhea?
You may not feel sick if you test positive, but you are bloody well infectious.
And in that population I can see the need for strict quarantine.
I’ve heard that STDS are out of control there.

Very old ‘fake’ news. There was a report that The Villages had the highest rate of increase in STD back about 10 years ago. Turns out there was a small increase in absolute terms but because of the small number of cases, the percentage increase was very large. (For example: Assume: In 2010, there were 5 cases. In 2011, there were 15 cases. That would be a tripling. However, it’s still only 15 cases in a population of 50,000. Assuming you believe 50,000 live there.)
It’s out pacing the flu, now, in daily kills.
Coronavirus Bingo Night.
Willingly surrendering our rights in the name of “safety”.
It pisses me off, but most FReepers don’t seem to mind.
Sure schools & businesses etc will reopen again but if anybody thinks things go back to normal; they are asleep.
A new French study was just completed. Yes this is the second one. It had more participants this time and the results are stunning. The United States is willingly and actively withholding hydroxychloroquine. Not a single Hospital in the United States is using this known cure. In one week the death rate will be 1,000 per week, following that in 2 weeks the death rate will be 10000 per week unless this known cure is put into full force. Again, not a single hospital is treating with this Dome cure as it standard form of treatment. If you go into the hospital now you are chances are not very good. President Trump needs to act now.
In my heart, I feel we are burning down a house to get rid of a spider.
Youre spreading FAKE NEWS!!!!!
