Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently said:
“They [national Democrats] were campaigning most when we had more of an American middle class. This upper-middle class is probably more moderate but that upper-middle class does not exist anymore in America.”
The Washington Post responded with the following:
“… the upper-middle class has actually grown. In a 2016 paper published by the Urban Institute, Stephen J. Rose documented that the upper-middle class has grown substantially, from 12.9 percent of the population in 1979 to 29.4 percent in 2014.”

Instead, I think she is genuinely ignorant of a lot of basic facts that get regularly reported in the mainstream media.
For those without the WP subscription. The Washington Post checked 5 claims by her and they were all wrong, so basically she doesn’t know a single thing.
Yep, she is truly a lefty dolt. But my wife and I are in that upper middle class and it doesn't seem like it. My expectation before we made it here was that we'd have a lot more disposable income on our hands. But that was in the days when the average reasonable car could be had for less than $10K or so. Now it seems like it's $50K or more. Housing is more expensive, etc. So the dollar just doesn't go near as far as it used to and it doesn't feel as if we've somehow "arrived." Still, Occasional-Cortex is an idiot; we're quite content!

Yep she’s a total dolt. I now live in FL with a MD income. Just moving here and working from home I got a $500 a month raise (I was paying $500 a month in MD state taxes) FL has no state tax.

I’m not going to pretend I don’t know what she’s saying. She’s clearly right. 100k-350k just doesn’t go as far as it did in 1979. The numbers don’t reflect the fact that the number of people who live a comfortable upper middle class lifestyle has probably gone down. Also, the type of people who can make it to the upper middle class isn’t quite as diverse as it once was. Techies in Cali may hit that number but the welder who works double and triple shifts can probably barely make his mortgage payments (if he even qualifies for a mortgage). I don’t have all the numbers but I suspect that what she says will resonate because that is, if nothing else, the perception. It makes no sense to me to demagogue and pretend that she’s pulling things out of thin air. I can disagree with her solutions (and I do) but at least she is trying to identify a problem here. It’s like Trump said...Bernie is right on trade he just has no clue what to do about it.
Give me a break. How dumb is it to nationalize what constitutes upper middle class? 100k in LA isn’t upper middle class. This is as dumb as a national minimum wage. Why is it people can’t just be honest about the position of people with whom they disagree. Having a nation of people who ,”just google it” is probably why everyone acts like mind numb drones.
