Question of the Day: Is Printing an Issue? (Conceal/Carry)

When you put your gun on in the morning and leave the house for the day, are you concerned about printing?

The above picture was shared with me on Twitter. Taken by a man in a checkout line behind a woman whose firearm is only being thinly veiled by her light pink t-shirt, she could obviously care less about printing.

It’s a topic of discussion I’ve had with several instructors and an issue I’ve had myself – should we be concerned with whether or not our gun “prints” through our clothing? Yes, but mostly because if you’re carrying concealed, the object is to actually conceal the firearm. Otherwise, you might as well open carry (and don’t get me started on that today).

most people aren’t paying attention...It’s usually just us gun guys that can spot a carrier.

Probably 99.9% true.

My Friend (US Army Tank commander) says the same thing.

He says I watch everyone, and they rarely make eye contact.

I was wearing aloha shirts for 10 years (with a tucked in t-shirt for comfort) before I started carrying so no one knew any different. At the gym I wear a dark t-shirt over a GLOCK 42. usually carry a GLOCK 26.

Here in Tx now that we have open carry, no one does, except in the woods.

I live southeast of San Antonio. I see plenty of open carriers here.

I see none in NE Tx DFW, maybe in the piney woods but they always did that there.

When I got here everyone had a gun rack and long arms in the rear window of the pick up truck but no one walking around with a hog leg on the hip.

I will say this for open carry.

No one is going to rob the stockmans bank when every depositor there doing business and every teller is wearing a hog leg.

Springfield Armory XDS in .45 in an Alien Gear IWB (Cloak Tuck 2) holster.

Absolutely nobody knows I’m concealed carrying ... as it should be.

She will never clear her garment in time to make to be able to defend herself.

Almost every article posted on this site in the past year have involved active shooters and the responses have been "if only someone had been carrying..."

The likelihood of this lady being attacked while "printing" is far less than her being in an active shooter environment where her firearm would make a positive impact regardless of how it is concealed.

Additionally, the greater chance of her having to actually brandish the firearm would occur in defense of a highway road rage incident where her method of concealment would have absolutely no bearing on the outcome.

The small pocket pistols are not for 25 yard shots. The good news is that you can conceal well enough to get closer, if needed.

But they are not the gun to use if there is an active shooter and you NEED to take a long shot.

Conceal carry involves compromises. Places like Arizona, Texas & Florida in the summer pretty much leave you the options of dressing like a slob OR carrying a smaller gun. How small depends on the build and what one is willing to wear.

I live in a low threat area and do almost all my business by day. I’m not inclined to make heroic efforts to conceal. I know a Hawaiian shirt 6 sizes too big conceals...as will an XXXXL T-shirt. I’m just not willing to because I don’t view the threat as justifying it.

That an out of state police officer can cause you so much trouble, both time and money, is a crime in itself.

The picture looks deliberately posed for an Internet/facebook meme.

In the vast majority of places and states, printing is simply not an issue.

45 states have open carry. About 15 of those require a permit for open carry, so open carry or concealed carry is not a legal problem.

5 states still ban most open carry. Texas only changed over to permitted open carry this year.

In the remaining 5 states, California, New York, Illinois, Florida and South Carolina.

In those states, you need to be a bit more careful of printing.

But, most of the time people do not even notice open carry, let alone printing.

There have been many places where I was very, very, careful not to print.

Now I do not worry about it, except if I am in Florida or South Carolina, as the other three do not recognize any of my permits.

I’ve got a denim sleeveless vest. Two, actually. Very comfortable during the cooler months. I’ve used sleeveless vests for comfort for about 40 years now, since I discovered them in the 70s. Never was in a boy band, though.

Exactly my mode of dress (unbuttoned Hawaiian shirt, tucked tee) unless it's REALLY hot.

If you get in the habit of Open Carrying, you’ll find that most people don’t notice. And those who do notice generally don’t care.

Wow. What world is that going to happen in?

Those of us who OC really get a kick out of the wild scenarios that non OC people seem to conjure up.

Keep yer powder try boys.
We are making progress.

I work in Tx and the boss lets me carry concealed.

I asked on day one what the protocol is if we call in an active shooter to the Po Po.
Had a meeting with them and they said we will drop you (we don’t know you from jonah) Maybe in future they will.

I said that’s what I thought

This aint a movie folks

I have to carry a smaller caliber weapon with less ammo because I carry in front, and it crowds Johnson and the boys.

Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good, and don't let your deadly weapon endanger your friendly weapon.
