Melania Trump was baptized Catholic, confirms Slovenian Cardinal Franc Rodé

The First Lady met with the cardinal and the Slovenian ambassador after her visit with Pope Francis.

Since the meeting of Donald and Melania Trump with Pope Francis, there has been much speculation about whether Melania is Catholic. She asked the pope to bless her rosary and also spent time in prayer before a statue of the Virgin Mary, causing plenty of media voices to wonder about her faith.

Some hours after their visit with the pope, as we noted here, a spokesperson for the First Lady, Stephanie Grisham, confirmed that indeed, Melania Trump professes the Catholic faith, though she didn’t say when or where Melania had been baptized. (Keep in mind that when Melania was born in 1970, Slovenia was part of Yugoslavia, under Communist rule, and baptisms in those years would have been in secret).

Now, an article published by the Slovenian edition of Vatican Radio gives us an interview with Cardinal Franc Rodé, the retired prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. The cardinal is also Slovenian, born there in 1934.

In the interview, the cardinal reports that Melania spoke with him of her baptism in Raka (her mother’s hometown), close to Melania’s birthplace of Novo Mesto. Though Melania didn’t confirm the year she was baptized, she presumably received the sacrament as a child.

The cardinal noted that Melania pointed out the curious coincidence that she was baptized on the same date as her husband’s birthday.

Here is an Aleteia translation of the section of the cardinal’s interview that dealt with this matter:

Vatican Radio, Wednesday, May 24 — Today at 12:30, Cardinal Franc Rodé and his secretary, Matej Pavlič, along with the Slovenian ambassador to Rome, Tomaž Kunstelj, met with Melania Trump, wife of US President Donald Trump, at the residence of the US ambassador to Italy. The meeting occurred after her return from her visit to Bambino Gesu Hospital.

The Slovenian dessert potica, and the Rosary

We first asked Mrs. Melania how the pope was. She said that he had made a very good impression on her, that he had seemed very relaxed, and she told us how he had asked her if she serves potica to her husband. She answered him that she loves potica, though she didn’t in fact answer the pope’s question. An interesting thing is that she brought with her her own rosary and asked the pope to bless it. That’s what was seen on TV. Thus, the First Lady of the United States prays the Rosary. That means that the most beautiful thing she brought from Slovenia she still has in the United States.

Her son Barron speaks Slovenian

Then I asked her how she feels in this new role as First Lady. She said that she fulfills her obligations and is aware of her responsibilities and that she tries to be at her husband’s side. But, she added, beyond all of this I am first of all a mom. Mother to her 11-year-old son, Barron, who is growing and who will soon be taller than her. I also asked her, “Does Baron speak Slovenian?” “Of course, of course,” she said. “With his grandparents, his grandmother and grandfather who live in New York, he always speaks in Slovenian. When he finishes the school year, he’ll go from New York to Washington, where he already has friends.”

The coincidence of Melania’s baptism date and President Trump’s birthday

I spoke of her baptism and she said, “Yes, that was in Raka” (a town near where she grew up, Sevnica in Slovenia). I commented that I knew the date the parish priest, Franc Čampa, had baptized her; I knew him very well; he was the pastor for many years in Mengeš. Mrs. Melania commented, “Something interesting is that my baptism was June 14, exactly the day of the birthday of my husband, the president of the United States.”

I told her that I knew Fr. Čampa really well — that he was truly a good priest, pious, educated, and very, very close to his people. And Melania answered me: “My mother spoke of this priest in the same way, just as you describe him.”

Donald has never been validly married, because of pre-nups. He was also Ivana’s second husband.

There is no obstacle to straightening out the Donald-Melania marriage. He just needs to tear up the pre-nup.

I don’t really post many threads under Religion unless they’re pretty much purely of a religious nature.

I do post negative things. That is not a lie. But to say all that I post is negative is a flat out lie.

At least you admit it.

I did not say that ALL of your posts are negative.

Again, you seem over-sensitive when asked about your (admitted) negative Trump related posts.

Maybe you just need to give it a bit of a rest.

Take care.

I do post negative things. If you want to attack those posts that is fine.

But don’t attack me about a post that isn’t even negative.

there is NOTHING wrong with that post about Melania’s parents. It would be a good support system for them to come and I wonder if they will. Barron will need a lot of support.

AND YES ..THE WH IS A STEP DOWN FROM TRUMP TOWER.

Ask anyone who has been. It smells, dingy, etc.

I posted We have a first lady who prays, prays the rosary even - so cool - God bless and keep her and her family safe.
To which you responded among other things

It is plain that although mankind was created by Him (G-D) they (most of them?) are not sons & daughters of God. While I'm at it, it's only fair to again remind -- "Mary" is not God.

Question:

My motivation was - I was cheering we have someone who is a religious practicing christian that prays the rosary, implying this is a welcome change. In pointing out she isn't divine, a subject not even remotely in my one sentence post or relevant, what was your motivation?

“How about yourself, though, leave off ENTIRELY making FR religion forum thread all about individual persons HERE?”

Individuals keep posting things that are clearly meant as swipes against Catholics by utilizing longstanding anti-Catholic rhetoric.

If you have a problem with me pointing out that no one here worships Mary as God, offer it up.

If you have a problem with me saying you should focus on what is true and not on something that no one here even believes, offer it up.

Seriously.

The Donald is not a Catholic and in the eyes of the law, he is married. Of course, I have no idea what the Presbyterian Church has to say on the matter.

In the eyes of Melania, because she is a Catholic, Donald has never been married to anyone.

In the eyes of the Catholic Church—i.e., in reality—he has never been married, because he has had a pre-nup before each wedding. A pre-nup invalidates a marriage.

Therefore, in reality, he is free to marry Melania as soon as he tears up the pre-nup.

At that point, Melania, who is a Catholic, will be validly married in the the Catholic Church.

Roman Catholic canon-law == NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH the ways of God.

If what you say were to be true --- that would leave Melania "living in sin" (and Donald Trump being "in sin" due to his on-going relationship with Melania).

According to what you wrote, Arthur, they are both outlaws.

Will "Mary" and the Rosary save her, save Melania? Did the chosen apostles lay hands on Mary, and give/convey to her power and authority to forgive sins?

Or, is it more like the Roman Catholic way of looking at and talking about forgiveness of sins can be twisted-up & highly misleading? I'd say both of the latter. If a toe (or a thumb) offends me -- cut it off.

Everyone that does the will of God, those are Christ's brothers, sisters, and mother -- according to Scripture. Still, Jesus did not instruct anyone to pray to them.

The so-called eyes of the Catholic Church -- NOT TO BE CONFUSED with actual all-encompassing reality, nor to be confused being the eyes of God.

The words of the Roman Catholic Church are not to be confused with, not to be taken as being Word of God, not unless one is willing to accept hireling, stand-in replacement(s) who declare themselves be intrinsically required intercessors.

Sorry, Charlie. The Lord Himself does not require your assistance (or your mere opinion) even if, according to His own purposes, He may make use of yourself, and your mere opinions wheresoever it suits His own Holy purpose.

But go ahead, talk about what the eyes of the Roman Catholic Church are like, all you want. Knock_yourself_out.

From the article, it's not exactly known that Melania (bless her heart) in fact "prays the rosary", although she may. It was established that she had one, and that it was blessed by Bergoglio.

If in fact you agree that "Mary" is not divine -- then we are in agreement on that point.

After saying as much, I referred to how Jesus himself was attributed (in NT Scripture) having explicitly instructed his disciples "how" to pray.

There -- right there --- is the central place of my motivations.

That much had been there on the page, from the beginning.
