The bank suggested that we put a fraud alert with a credit agency, but if you do it online they ask for a credit card and don't tell you how much the charge is going to be. There is no live person.

Maybe a recorded “yes” shouldn’t be used to validate a charge. What a stupid system.

What was the question? I don’t think any system uses a “verbal yes” to establish identity. They’d have to already be in possession of all the other information.

Another reason I don’t answer the phone unless I recognize the caller on caller ID. If it’s an obvious solicitation call, I just click it on, then click it off, if I’m not in the mood to hear the phone ring.

Call your credit card companies. Not the reporting companies

This whole “can you hear me” thing is a hoax:

http://www.snopes.com/can-you-hear-me-scam/

I’m assuming you NEVER EVER give out your CC numbers on the phone, including this time, so simply saying “yes” over the phone doesn’t do squat unless the putative fraudsters already have your CC for some other reason, in which case they can submit as many fraudulent charges as they like without even your fake, coerced “consent” obtained under fraudulent circumstances.

Your best bet is to set up online account(s) for your CC(s) and set extremely low email notification thresholds for all the different categories of charging, e.g., by phone, by online, by actual use of the card, etc.. Then you’ll receive an email each time the instant a charge exceeds the threshold so you can monitor your CC in near-real time.

EVERYONE should do this with ALL of their CCs, no matter what, whether they’re worried about a specific situation or not.

I actually caught a LARGE fraudulent charge this way before by CC company did and I called THEM. I also figured out who the merchant was who was also being scammed (a car dealership actually) and called them to and told them not to give the thief the car!

If you don’t think ya’ll can manage setting all of this up, there should be a help line for your CC where someone can walk you through this as you attempt to do it. If a local bank issued the card, you could call them stop by to get the help line number.

I think the threat is overblown on this issue. I would not worry about it except to watch you statements and dispute any charges that you did not make.

I don’t answer the phone unless the caller number or name is from someone who is a friend or family member. Everyone else can leave a message.

Just went through this. The credit freeze is free for up to 5 years if you have a police report of fraud that you can send them. If not, it also free for the first 90 days. After that, it will cost a nominal amount ($2 or $3) for each 90 day extension. They do NOT automatically extend the freeze and bill you. You have to re-apply each 90 days. There are basically 3 companies you have to contact. Each has its own rules that MUST be followed exactly, or they will not put on a freeze. They don’t make it easy.

Recently Ive been getting a lot of calls from the same 3 or 4 numbers at 800, 801 and 809 area codes. Either the first or second question is “What is your Social Security Number?”

I used to try to engage them in conversation to find out who they were. They would give a name like “John” and “National” followed by jibberish. Now I have them stored in caller ID physh phish etc.

So you didn’t give them a credit card number or anything?

If not, if they send you something, send it back with delivery notification. When/if you are sent a bill don’t pay it but file a complaint with your Attorney General.

It would help if you said how much info besides the yes was given.

I’ve received these calls several times a week for the past several weeks. They come all from different numbers, many of the numbers appear to be in my area code with local exchanges.

Then there are the robo calls from ‘Brooke’ who tells me that my car warranty (I don’t have one) has expired and that I need to make a payment to keep it ongoing.

Then there is the South Asian named Nancy or Bruce that want to sell me medical equipment (back brace). It usually gets as far as my retort “ You fraud; get off my f’ing phone.

It does no good to put a block on those numbers; they keep using different numbers every time they call.
