Personally, I was very concerned about Trumps safety. If the crowds were more carefully screened then I'm good with that....but...the media should have reported that honestly.

But they didn’t have the number to storm the barricades and deracinate the collection in the Fountain Garden of the Smithsonian Enid Haupt Garden like Obama’s people did. The poor curator was in tears the next day.
They showed the huge crowd live several times during the inauguration. There was never any doubt it was a huge crowd on par with Obama’s inauguration, never mind who was bigger.
CNN has become so petty and vile that they have to try to pretend Trump could not attract a large crowd for his inauguration. This after the huge crowds he got for his campaign rallies while Hillary spoke to a scattered few at her rallies.
CNN did the same thing with the original tea party rallies which were huge, but they would show a tiny piece of them, then massively under report the size. Fox News would show the entire size of the tea party rally and they were always impressively large.
CNN is treading water and going down for the 3rd time. I can’t wait until they drown. Only die hard Marxists and homo freaks watch CNN anymore.
How many stayed away after weeks of thuggish threats from the left to disrupt and create chaos on inauguration day?
And how many were unable, or gave up getting to the main venues due to the leftist protestors, or the security necessary to contain them?
Any news outlet discussing inauguration attendance numbers without mentioning these factors is engaging in fake news.
Yes, I often thought the use of chains was an irony the protesters truly cannot fathom.
They have no concept of shackles, outside of the bedroom.
Keep in mind too there were no terroristic threats from anti-Obama protesters.
Obama supporters were not physically blocked, women physically attacked or spat on by anti-Obama people.
That NPS camera used for all the shots of the mall showing crowd size is static, appears to me to be located on the Washington Monument from the vantage point. Many photos going back years. I suspect it’s not as if there is only one photo to argue about. I suspect there are a series of them. From the video of the inauguration, I see the mall filled. The photo being bandied about looks to be either early or late.
Either way, it doesn’t have to be a mystery. Pretty sure there are photos taken periodically throughout the day, maybe hour by hour. Lay it to rest. Why is the NPS being so silent? Well, I know the answer but the question needs to be asked and answered in a highly public manner.’

I just don’t care about crowd sizes. The people who sent Trump to the White House live far away from Washington DC and probably spent Friday at work, as I did here in Florida.
Among others the trolls operating the National Park Service twitter account for partisan purposes, until the administration shut down the use of department twitter accounts.
The employees should be removed from their jobs for using government resources for partisan purposes.
IMO.. Trump team should not have mentioned a word about the crowd size. Even though we knew the media would.
Move on from it and get to work.

There are two counter arguments. First, it is Spicer's job to take the fight to the media. When CNN gets banned from the WH press room, they can say that it is not like we didn't warn you, call you on your lies and give you the opportunity to correct the record.
Two, a lot of this nonsense is being put about by government employees who are Clinton / Obama operatives who have burrowed in to the bureaucracy. Using government resources to spread partisan propaganda is a firing offense and gives Trump the opportunity to root them right back out again.
