IMO.. Trump team should not have mentioned a word about the crowd size. Even though we knew the media would.
Move on from it and get to work.
There are two counter arguments. First, it is Spicer's job to take the fight to the media. When CNN gets banned from the WH press room, they can say that it is not like we didn't warn you, call you on your lies and give you the opportunity to correct the record.
Two, a lot of this nonsense is being put about by government employees who are Clinton / Obama operatives who have burrowed in to the bureaucracy. Using government resources to spread partisan propaganda is a firing offense and gives Trump the opportunity to root them right back out again.

The Trump team is taking a “no broken windows” approach to the media. That is, don’t let even minor offenses slide. This seems to be part of that.
That's the beauty of President Trump, he can do both, at the same time!
