And This Is Why I Carry Guns When I Walk My Dog

Milwaukee Wisconsin Journal Sentinel:

A man walking his dog Tuesday night near his home shot two people who tried to rob him, killing one and wounding the other.

Deonte M. Thomas, 17, of Milwaukee was shot to death and his 18-year-old companion was wounded, police said. The 36-year-old man had a concealed-carry permit.

The incident happened about 10 p.m. in the 6500 block of W. Euclid Ave. when the two robbers were driving around looking for a possible victim, Ald. Mark Borkowski said.

“Obviously these people picked the wrong person, but not everyone has concealed carry,” Borkowski said Wednesday. “We all get a sense of security because it’s our neighborhood, but we have to be diligent.”

The attempted robbery happened two blocks from St. Gregory the Great parish on Milwaukee’s south side in Borkowski’s 11th aldermanic district, an area that’s normally a quiet neighborhood, he said, but “I think it’s anywhere in our community.

“It’s my understanding these kids were looking for trouble. They had been involved in trouble prior to this incident,” Borkowski said. “To pick a guy who can defend himself has showed that regardless of whether you’re going to engage in this kind of criminal activity, you really don’t know. You may meet your match.”

Milwaukee Police Sgt. Timothy Gauerke said the two suspects may be responsible for an armed robbery about 8:55 p.m. Tuesday, about an hour before the incident on W. Euclid, in the 2200 block of E. Park Place.

Thomas was arrested as a juvenile for criminal trespassing and armed robbery in 2014 while the 18-year-old man, whose name was not released, was arrested in 2014 for auto theft. The 18-year-old man is facing charges of party to the crime of armed robbery and homicide in connection with the incident on W. Euclid Ave.

Gauerke declined to release information about the number of wounds the robbery suspects sustained nor the type of handgun used. The 18-year-old was still hospitalized Wednesday afternoon. Thomas died at the scene.

The 36-year-old man stayed at the scene following the shooting and was interviewed by police. The case will be reviewed by the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s office to determine whether any charges will be filed against the 36-year-old man.

This man only made one mistake. You get one guess as to what it is.

My sympathy is with the ordinary Citizen just walking his dog and forced into it by thugs. Thank God he was able to walk away from it alive.

Entire post well stated. The "ordinary Citizen" was forced into defending himself in what he believed to be a life or death situation for him.

He now has to live with the fact he took a life. Justifiably so IMO, but he still has to live with it. That's gotta be awful, no matter what the circumstances.

Being in the South, I figure my state would impede any federal attempt to do something like that. And probably a quarter of adult men are carrying around here, so it’d be a pretty long list. And besides that, screw them, they can come and get me. I’m not going to scurry and hide because they’ve got some list. All that aside, it really is a fun hobby, these guns. I’ve just been shooting at the range but I’m thinking of doing some match shooting of some kind.

"If I save my life..and others..and I just wound one..and kill the other..I'm good with that. "

Same here -- and I pray that I never have cause to use my weapons.

OTOH, others might observe that one of the pair can still hype his homies up into seeking "revenge"...

...

That’s a shame. Revolver or pistol? Was one in the chamber? Was the safety on? Double or single action? Caliber? Type of ammo? Such info could save future lives.

They are a lot of fun. I have a friend who has country property and one of the most fun things is using a golf ball as a target and competing to see who can shoot it into the woods first with .22 rifles.

In my state, GA, about 5% of the adult population has a concealed weapons license. Plus it is legal to carry in your car without one, as the law sees you car as an extension of your house.

“And This Is Why I Carry Guns When I Walk My Dog”

If this neighborhood was any worse, his dog would have been carrying guns too.

Good shoot with a happy ending.

I just googled the stats — it’s 12% here in Alabama. Probably overwhelmingly men so roughly double that number to get the adult male percentage. Not sure how AL law sees guns in the car.

Nice!

I just know you’ve got reciprocity with us, which is nice. SC finally got on board a year or so ago. I’m sure tons of Georgians violated SC law going to Hilton Head and such, before that happened.

I'm a little hard pressed to call it a happy ending with someone dead although that's not to say it isn't a good ending. there is a difference. The dead guy deserved to be dead and the shooter deserves to be left alone about it. It's ok to be sad for the dead thug but better to be happy that you aren't going to your own funeral.

Yep, we’ve got a pretty solid block here in the south east in terms of reciprocity, and I’ll bet we continue to add states. Pretty cool, really.
