Entire post well stated. The "ordinary Citizen" was forced into defending himself in what he believed to be a life or death situation for him.
He now has to live with the fact he took a life. Justifiably so IMO, but he still has to live with it. That's gotta be awful, no matter what the circumstances.

Otherwise, he should sue the deceased's estate for emotional distress at having to kill the deceased. I mean, what a horrible experience!
