White House officials predicted Thursday that new sanctions being levied against Russia in retaliation for that country’s apparent hacking during the 2016 election would not be reversed by President-elect Donald Trump, despite Trump’s call for warmer relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
After he takes the oath of office in late January, Trump could unilaterally act to roll back the sanctions, which include expelling 35 Russian operatives and closing down two Russian facilities in the United States. But White House officials argued that if he did so, Trump would risk looking like he had caved to Russian interests.
“If a future president decided he wanted to allow in a large tranche of Russian intelligence agents, presumably a future president could do that,” a senior Obama administration official said on a Thursday press call. “We don’t think it would make much sense to reopen Russian intelligence compounds. ... We don’t think it makes much sense to invite back in Russian intelligence agents.”
Trump’s transition team, as of the time of this publication, had not released a statement on the new sanctions issued by President Barack Obama...

Perhaps Trump would NOT be caving in to Russian interests, but correcting an unjustified and foolish move by the Obama administration.
It seems stupid to me to blame the Russians or anyone else for your own lack of cyber security measures.

The way I see this, Obama is doing what he can to damage US/Russia relations, then tying Trumps hands in trying to restore them.

Since there probably no chance there is actual proof the Russians hacked the elections, all Trump has to say is since the previous administration had no proof, I’m lifting the sanctions...
If the security agencies have proof, I will reevaluate the sanctions...
EVERY SINGLE ACTION. PERIOD.
This would have two effects:
(1) Obama's presidency would effectively come to an end 3 weeks early
(2) Trump would be inoculated from attacks over his motives for reversing any one particular action (such as being Russia's stooge), being able to instead say "I told you I would reverse them ALL."
obama just gave trump what trump uses best; leverage. no telling what he’ll get from putin in return for undoing some of this stuff.
