Venezuela has a new 'forced labor' law that can require people to work in field

Socialism is just great, isn’t it? Venezuela has been having a major food crisis for months and now might force its own people to do farm labor.

Vice News reported:

Venezuela has a new ‘forced labor’ law that can require people to work in fields

International human rights activists are complaining that new laws have introduced forced labour in Venezuela.

“A new decree establishing that any employee in Venezuela can be effectively made to work in the country’s fields as a way to fight the current food crisis is unlawful and effectively amounts to forced labor,” Amnesty International said in a statement released on Thursday.

President Nicolás Maduro signed a decree at the end of last week that gives powers to the labor ministry to order “all workers from the public and private sector with enough physical capabilities and technical know-how” to join a government drive aimed at increasing food production.

They can be required to work in the agricultural sector for a 60-day period that can be extended for another 60 days “if the circumstances require it.”

Shortages of basic goods have become a normal part of life for most Venezuelans ever since the country was plunged into an economic crisis by the plummeting oil price. Food shortages have become particularly acute in recent months, accompanied by violent demonstrations and violent responses to these by the police.

Earlier this month, 120,000 desperate Venezuelans took advantage of a weekend’s temporary relaxation of border controls to flood into the Colombian city of Cúcuta to shop for basics. Local stores reportedly ran out of supplies in a few hours.

Has anyone asked Bernie Sanders for comment?

Another Cuba.
No industry. No agriculture. No businesses. No economy.
The nation looted by the communist/socialist ruling class.

It looks awful but I am confused about one thing. Why is it that in all those pictures the only one who appears to be actually starving is one dog who is in several different pictures? I saw a couple of people who are very skinny but I see a FEW people like that where I live, including my next door neighbor who says he is five nine and 125 pounds. Most of the people who are scrambling for scraps look very well fed to me. I would guess that their average bodyfat percentage is considerably higher than the average American’s was sixty years ago.

Did this come about so suddenly that they have not begun to lose weight yet? This looks too much like a report that was on sixty minutes decades ago showing workers in Mexico who were supposedly living on something like two dollars a day at the time yet all were healthy looking, obviously not hungry, the women had nice looking clothes and hair and they were shown out dancing in the evening.

'Chávez pretended to be this big Socialist, but he was rich himself. He was a hypocrite. He was a f*****g liar. His legacy is people like me looking for food in the garbage.'

Starving to death because of socialism, and still praising socialism.

Nice comment- perhaps you might want to direct your questions to the Daily Mail/the author of this article.

I’ve had similar concerns with this also and I work to find the best link that enhances or coroborates a posting of mine on FR>

I am only the messenger- so please don’t shoot the messenger.

On the other hand- there are plenty of Venezuealans crossing the border into Colombia to acquire food & supplies.

here’s the link :http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/ap/article-3694323/Thousands-cross-Venezuela-border-shopping-scarce-food.html

I am not sure exactly what you mean when you say I am correct. I understand the part about gaining weight to survive lean times but why do these people scrambling for scraps look well fed? I have been reading about famine in Venezuela for a while now, why don’t they look skinny and dirty yet? An average sized adult on a one thousand calorie a day diet loses weight rapidly and I would expect they would be getting well under a thousand calories daily if they are scrambling in the trash for food, they could burn more calories looking than they obtain from what they find.

That’s exactly what China did in Mao Tse Tung’s “GREAT LEAP FORWARD” in the late 1950’s to early 1960’s.

I’m not about to shoot the messenger, I just don’t understand when I see people scrambling in the trash for food or searching through empty stores and yet they look to me as if they are well fed, their clothes don’t look dirty and torn and they appear to be well groomed. Also those standing in line appear to be orderly, I would expect hungry people to be ill tempered and unruly. I’m not drawing any conclusions, I have never been in such a situation but it does not look as I would have imagined.

$Billions. About $4 billion. But more socialism will solve the problem, right?

Obviously the folks you note are well fed

I have had occasion to help my wife catalog and save digitally old family photos. There are lots of pics of lots of folks from the time of my parents that include the depression and WW II. The general condition is no “overweight” people. I know they were relatively prosperous and not starving, but they simply did not have the abundant excess we have today.

There are almost none depicting the general condition you point out in current Venezuela.

It is also noteworthy that the Venezuela depicted is urban. We don’t see the contrast in the rural areas. I suspect folks there are not so heavy.

But, you are right. There doesn’t seem to be evidence of famine where people look like the dog
