I am not sure exactly what you mean when you say I am correct. I understand the part about gaining weight to survive lean times but why do these people scrambling for scraps look well fed? I have been reading about famine in Venezuela for a while now, why don’t they look skinny and dirty yet? An average sized adult on a one thousand calorie a day diet loses weight rapidly and I would expect they would be getting well under a thousand calories daily if they are scrambling in the trash for food, they could burn more calories looking than they obtain from what they find.
Obviously the folks you note are well fed
I have had occasion to help my wife catalog and save digitally old family photos. There are lots of pics of lots of folks from the time of my parents that include the depression and WW II. The general condition is no “overweight” people. I know they were relatively prosperous and not starving, but they simply did not have the abundant excess we have today.
There are almost none depicting the general condition you point out in current Venezuela.
It is also noteworthy that the Venezuela depicted is urban. We don’t see the contrast in the rural areas. I suspect folks there are not so heavy.
But, you are right. There doesn’t seem to be evidence of famine where people look like the dog
