I don't know whether that's even true or not. I know that Trump talks about issues a lot.
In any event, whether Trump employed that strategy "first" or not, one thing for sure is that Ted Cruz has taken the "trash the other guy" strategy to incredible new heights.
And Ted Cruz does flat out lie about Trump's positions. And when someone points out his distortion, he just won't let it go.
I honestly have to conclude that Ted Cruz is willing to lie if he thinks it will help him win.
There's no question that he grossly distorts Donald Trump's positions on many issues. Just absolute misrepresentation.
I don't know why he thinks that's necessary, or even effective.
I don't think that the moniker "Lyin' Ted Cruz" began as the truth, but Ted Cruz, in his blindly ambitious drive to win at any cost, now personifies the label. He'd have much more impact if he just touted his own policy positions, instead of lying about Mr. Trump's.
Ted Cruz's GOPe/Machiavellian tactics are pretty easy for people to see for themselves...

You say Cruz has insulted Trump supporters, but I thought I remembered Trump insulting several candidates and their supporters throughout his campaign. Does that trouble you as well?
In the first case because it is the truth. In the second case it is all LIES. Lyin Ted don’t cha know.

Trump has insulted other candidates. The only supporters he has insulted are Bernie supporters disrupting his rallies.
I should add - I can tolerate the candidate to candidate insults I don’t necessarily like them. But insults directed at the supporters is a different matter with exception of the disruptive supporters. And I have not heard Trump insult Cruz supporters.
“Low energy”, “loser”, “embarrassment”, “dumb as a rock”, any of these ring a bell? All directed at his first target, Jeb Bush.

That’s NOT what he said, and certainly not what he meant.
He was talking about the very poor and mentally ill and homeless people that are uninsurable. He said we can’t have people dying in the streets and the government would pay for it. Not EVERYBODY, just the indigent. Cruz was absolutely lying about this.
I can agree with that. I don’t recall Cruz insulting Trump supporters, though. He might have done - but I didn’t hear it or don’t recall it.
This guy is either pocketing several million dollars from Soros to continue this charade, or he’s falling apart right in front of us. If it’s the latter, I think it may be related to his relationship with his father, but that’s just a guess.
If i had spent the first 4 decades of my life being told that God had preordained me to take my rightful place one day as His earthly King, I might be falling apart on national TV too. Think about this a minute. Ted Cruz is:
-A person who loves his father very much, as expected. If Cruz the son has spent his entire life trying to please his father, then he may have to work extra hard to win his father’s love (just a guess, but the pattern fits).
-A person whose father seems to be using him to fulfill the father’s own unmet ambitions.
-A person who has been told for 4 decades that one day he will rule over the 7 Mountains: Business, Govt, Family, Religion, Media, Education, & Entertainment.
-A person whose wife had to be interpreter to tell him that God told HER that He wants Ted to run for President in 2016. (I think if I were in Ted’s shoes, I would have asked God to talk to me directly, just in case the wife was a little too ambitious to be a First Lady. Nothing personal against Heidi.)
-A person who feels duty-bound to “take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving you for your own” (Joshua 1:11, i think).
-And finally, a person who may be having a very hard time dealing with his contradictory feelings right now. He’s having to face this while on the world stage, which is much worse. Where is God? Did my father lie to me? Or is my faith not strong enough and I just need to pray harder?
Some may laugh at these speculations, but if this is what’s happening, someone needs to have a talk with Papa Cruz so he’ll give Ted permission to quit. I’d bet good money that Ted was never taught by his father how to be his own man and make his own decisions.
