The Real Bob Knight
The American Enterprise ^ | October 2002 | Michael Ledeen

Posted on 04/28/2016 9:10:24 AM PDT by cdga5for4

Though subjected to a “Borking” as harsh and unfair as that experienced by any political figure in America over the past decade, Knight’s long record of success and a lifetime of loyalty to his friends enabled him to relocate to Lubbock, Texas, where he now coaches the Red Raiders of Texas Tech. And, just as he had at IU, Knight took a wounded basketball program and revitalized it dramatically, producing a winning season with a team that had finished at the bottom of the Big 12 Conference the year before, while filling arenas all over the country and earning an invitation to the NCAA tournament at the end of the season.

For the younger crowd, this is an excellent article by former Reagan staffer Michael Ledeen on Bob Knight.

Love this: “Players, and (Knight’s) sport define the meaning of loyalty.
If Americans have become intolerant of such hard men, they
are surely diminished by it. Our young need such leaders, especially
the fighting men in all sectors of our society. But our country’s
young men will never learn such lessons in an atmosphere
of enforced sweetness. We must let boys be boys-so they can
become men.”

He personally raised several million for the library at IU before the school screwed him.

If you had ever had to deal with his ex, Nancy, you’d understand completely.

We are all flawed individuals, for we are human after all.

Much of his public persona is defined by the incident where he threw a chair on the basketball court. I think its because he was pissed off at a bad call by a referee? There have been other stories of how hard he is on his players.

I have zero respect for someone with no impulse control, and I don’t care how successful he was as a coach.

Mark is getting close to becoming Glen Beck.

Mark forgets about the $500K Cruz paid to Carly.... and she later endorsed AND joined his ticket.

Would one better understand how flawed Knight is, or why Knight is flawed? I could see it going either way.

Of course, Texas Tech has a history of screwing their coaches, as well. Witness what they teamed up with ESPN to do to Leach. And then Craig James was stupid enough to think he could ride the controversy to a US Senate seat from Texas.

Levin not understanding why Trump would want Bobby Knight standing next to him in the State of Indiana is shows less about the understanding of local politics than Cruz’s understanding of the game of basketball by calling it a basketball “ring”

Bobby Knight might be a SOB, but he is a SOB who tells it like it is. He is the most politically incorrect coach of all time. I know he is “old School” like Patton, Woody Hayes, Sheriff Joe etc., He is not always a great shot with a shotgun, but he tells it like it is. If Bobby is for Trump then I’m listening!

You’ll probably have to explain that to me. When he doesn’t get his way, he acts like a three year-old

Very thought provoking article. Not being a basketball fan, I will admit that all I know about Knight is what ESPN has shown me in brief film clips - chair throwing, yelling and screaming, ad nauseum.....

But when you put his actions into perspective, he has done nothing worse than any other successful college football coach has done. I've seen them throw headphones, knock over gator aid coolers and tables and grab players by the face mask while screaming at them.......that's all part of coaching and turning kids into men.

But in terms of Bobby Knight, I think the media vendetta against him was because he never kissed their asses.........

I wonder what these media pussies would have thought about my drill sergeants.........LOL!

Magpie’s look for faults. I’ll take Patton, Knight, and Trump for my leaders.
