He personally raised several million for the library at IU before the school screwed him.

If you had ever had to deal with his ex, Nancy, you’d understand completely.

We are all flawed individuals, for we are human after all.

Much of his public persona is defined by the incident where he threw a chair on the basketball court. I think its because he was pissed off at a bad call by a referee? There have been other stories of how hard he is on his players.

For a good number of his players, he was the only “Father Figure” they had in their lives. And the vast majority of those kids grew up to be good, responsible adults.

Some years ago I read " Season On The Brink" by Jon Feinstein. Feinstein, a political liberal, tried to give a fair view of Knight. He probably succeeded.

I believe Knight is somewhere between the devil he's depicted as by many and the great, conservative person some make him out to be. I never much approved of his coaching methods although he obviously got results.

But his way of humiliating a number of his players was not something I approved of. John Wooden, a great conservative, didn't have to do any of that stuff to get his players to play well. And he was not known for throwing chairs on the court.

Knight was obsessed with winning, and he often let that get the better of him. Winning is nice, but treating players like they're more than just objects to move around on a basketball court is something different.
