UK gov't: Earth will only have 12-hour warning to deal with massive Sun explosion
foxnews.com ^ | July 29, 2015

It sounds like a scene from a disaster movie – mass power failures, plane crashes, satellite disruptions, and train derailments. These are some of the threats modern society would face in the case of a massive solar storm, according to a new document released by the U.K. Department of Business, Innovation and Skills.

The “Space Weather Preparedness Strategy” outlines the disturbances that could be caused by unpredictable solar weather. The most striking find from the report is the fact that a country would have only a 12-hour warning period before the storm would hit the planet.

The worst possible scenario would be a coronal mass ejection of plasma from the sun, during which the corona – that bright glow seen encircling the sun during a total solar eclipse – detaches, shooting off X-rays and high-energy particles directly to the Earth.

Not to worry.

The Obamessiah will wave his hands, stop the electromagnetic storm in its tracks, and save the earth.

I think they are talking about a coronal mass ejection like the Carrington event in 1859.
It would take out the satellites and probably the power grid and most electronics.

The old tube radios would still work IF there were any stations still broadcasting. And those little cheap transistor radios we all had in the 1960 and 70s would likely still work. But anything connected to long wires be it antenna cables or power cords would be zapped!!!!

We as a society become more vulnerable when all the old simple reliable technology is trashed in favor of the new complicated whizbang stuff.Keeping some of the simple stuff for emergencies is sensible.

Makes me wish we’d revitalize Civil Defense. Harden the grid (it is going to down - we need to be able to bring it back up!), and have emergency service ready. Maybe an emergency duty for every able bodied person?

There absolutely is stuff you can do in that 12-hour window to preapare for a CME hitting earth.

Most apparent is the task of removing the sensitive components out of your car and protecting them.

Seems like a no brainer.

“That’s OK - I can get really drunk in 12 hours. Maybe twice. “

Reminded me of a time a few friends and I drove hours to the coast, took a morning ferry over to the island then drove another hour along the beach looking for a group we were going to fish with.

We find the group camped on edge of the water and a friend’s cousin stumbles out of his camper a joins us while a bottle of Jack is being passed around. On his turn he says, “no thanks, I’ve already been drunk once this morning”.

I know of some old timer amateur radio operators who still revel about the DX days of Cycle 19 in the late 1950’s. IIRC, that was well studied for the, then, International Geophysical Year (IGY).

CMEs are such a non-threat compared with impacts from space. The EMP from the early 20th-century Lake Michigan impact knocked out six power plants. No warning. Still isn't much warning. Thanks PROCON.

An excuse to begin too-little, too-late desultory CYA preparations for the inevitable Iranian EMP which Kerry has enabled.

Did you know that Kerry's daughter, married an Iranian? And the best man at the wedding, was the son of the chief Iranian nuclear negotiator?

...isn't this why they used to have Security Clearances, to weed out those subject to dual loyalties for whatever reason?

...and yes, I know all about the Carrington event.

Reminds me of the movie ‘Knowing’.

Oct. 19 - EE.

Nicholas Cage always *was* a creeper.
