University of Chicago Newspaper: Free Speech Should be Curtailed so Muslims Aren’t Offended by It
Pundit Press ^ | 3/23/15 | Aurelius

Xin Tian Yong, a contributor for the Chicago Maroon, has declared that free speech needs to be curtailed if people disagree with it. Specifically, Yong believes that speech that he considers “immoral or hateful” should be banned, especially if he considers it hurtful to minority religious or race groups like Muslims or African Americans.

Yong’s article, titled “Actions speak louder than words,” begins by talking about a writer for Charlie Hebdo speaking at the University’s French Club.

Zineb El Rhazoui, the writer for Charlie Hebdo, defended both satire and free speech...

Yong writes that El Rhazoui spoke about the terrorist attack that killed several of her colleagues. Then, according to Yong, “Muslim student Aseal Tineh,” who he describes as “brave,” stood up to question El Rhazoui.

Saying she felt threatened by Charlie Hebdo and El Rhazoui, the student asked if she could condemn the attacks, but not say that she supports people’s right to free speech by saying, “I am Charlie.”

El Rhazoui responded by saying that if you support free speech, you must take the good with the bad. And if you die to defend freedom of speech, then you died for something worthwhile. You have to have “the balls to die for ideas,” El Rhazoui declared.

Yong slams this statement by El Rhazoui, saying that by saying this, she is actually against the free speech of others. By disagreeing, Yong explains, El Rhazoui was pushing “offensive vitriol” that infringes on people’s right to free speech.

...More than that, Yong continues, El Rhazoui is wrong in thinking that veils on Muslim women cannot be used as “a symbol of empowerment.”

...He also slams El Rhazoui for suggesting that Islam has ever inspired any terrorists or terrorist attacks. “Islam does not “produce” criminals or terrorists."

I’m a member of a religious minority, and as an Orthodox Christian, I find most positions expressed by liberals, leftists, progressives and the like, on social issues offensive. (And on some of them, e.g. “gay marriage” I think I’ll get support from one of the groups he lists, to wit Muslims.)

Does he really want to go there?

Muslims promote slavery of those who are not Muslim. If their policies are endorsed, then there must not be any public opposition to slavery so as not to offend Muslims.

Logic turned upside down. Free speech = hate.

I had this discussion with a black co-worker who had a cartoon on her desk saying your right to speech ends when the listener is offended. I tried to impress on her the suppression of her position but she wouldn’t budge.

I have seen zero evidence that American moslems are into the fight against homosexuality, abortion, etc. Like Black and Hispanic chrstians, they are thoroughly ensconced on the left side of the spectrum along with all that stuff. And the left never attacks its own, even when logical decrees that they should be tearing each other to shreds.

As I keep saying, the heels' dressing room.

OK Mr Yong, I declare that I don’t like your speech. Therefore you can’t say what you want anymore.
See how that swings both ways?

“See how that swings both ways?”

No, no: in his vision, people like him are in charge. It’s when *they* are offended that speech is banned. Of course, the 1st Amendment was written to prevent precisely that sort of thing. He longs to be rid of it.

Yeah... homosexual parades, marriages, TV shows, ad campaigns... all the homosexual trash that is crammed in our face on a daily basis is very offensive to Muslims.
I guess Mr Yong agrees that it all has to go now, huh?
Cause, you know, we wouldn’t want to offend any muslims.

Oh and the way western women behave, you know, reading - driving - walking in public... all these abominations should be outlawed, huh Mr Yong?
We wouldn’t want to offend any muslims, would we.

Well at least he said clearly what most liberals think.

Personally, I’d rather kick the whole bunch of easily-offended headchoppers out of the country.

As much as that may be true, even for those that who assume (falsely) that they will “be in charge” there’ll be a point where their speech will be defined as “extreme” and curtailed.

It’s just when that point is reached, jacka**es like this kid will look around and be completely perplexed at why no one else is defending HIS freedom of speech. Not comprehending that, thanks to him and his fellow travellers/useful idiots, no one is left to.
