Bill Maris, head of Google's investment arm, says humans will live to be 500-years-old in the future, while today's cancer treatments will soon seem "primitive" as scientists continue to hunt for cure.
Humans will live to be 500-years-old, according to a top Google executive, who said the company was investing millions of dollars in life sciences to ensure this vision became a reality.
Bill Maris, a venture capitalist and the managing partner of Google Ventures, the internet giant's investment fund, said it had hired scientists as partners in order to identify start-ups that could cure cancer and make chemotherapy "seem primitive" within 20 years.
If you ask me today, is it possible to live to be 500? The answer is yes, he told Bloomberg in an interview.
We actually have the tools in the life sciences to achieve anything that you have the audacity to envision, he said. I just hope to live long enough not to die.
Mr Maris said scientists had made huge advances in medicine over the past two decades.
Twenty years ago, without genomics, you could only treat cancer with a poison, said Mr Maris. Thats really different from, We can cure your cancer by reverse-engineering a stem cell. You can now legitimately invest in a company that could cure cancer.(continued)

Who wants to live 500 years in this mortal body (even with replacement parts) and in this evil world? The Bible offers a vastly superior, endless life in an incorruptible body.
Do you really think that this guy believes in Heaven or Hell?
The brain doesn’t really seem to have a shelf life past 100 or so.
We’re mere mortals, and should be happy that we’ve extended life as much as we have.
How long did Noah live?
We are living in the age of Noah ... AGAIN...
Imagine saving 300 years for retirement? And WAITING that long!
Not if Bill Gates gets his way
Based on what I’ve seen happen to society in just the past 30 years, there’s no way in hell I want to be around for 500.
No kidding! The most annoying part of being immortal is all the guys who come after you trying to cut your head off with a sword. I never agreed to this “there can be only one!” crap!
Never mind his forefather Methuselah.
“Who wants to live 500 years in this mortal body (even with replacement parts) and in this evil world? The Bible offers a vastly superior, endless life in an incorruptible body.”
I want the lifespan of the biblical patriarchs in Genesis:
The lifetimes given for the patriarchs in the Book of Genesis are: Adam 930 years, Seth 912, Enos 905, Kenan 910, Mahalalel 895, Jared 962, Enoch 365 (did not die, but was taken away by God), Methuselah 969, Lamech 777, Noah 950.
Methus’lah lived nine hundred years,
Methus’lah lived nine hundred years,
But who calls dat livin’
When no gal will give in
To no man what’s nine hundred years ?
I can’t think of any scenario where living that long would be desirable. Think of the trouble one would have fitting with contemporary society over the centuries. It’s tough enough to deal with some of the nonsense in the past decade that is threatening to become the societal norm. 50 years from now, I’d be totally lost. 500 years from now? Unthinkable.
Heaven forfend. Politicians already live too long for anyone’s taste...
Why would we want to have a bunch of old codgers running around mucking everything up. Everybody knows you got to be under 25 to know everything
Chicago democrat voters already do this.
= = =
Didn’t Heinlein write a story about someone living a long time, and getting tired of it?
Google brings up Methuselah’s Children, but the plot is different from the story I remember.
You are thinking of “Time Enough for Love”.
Being a geologist, I’d take it in a heartbeat. Would be a bit tough on you and whichever gal you hitched up with every 50 or so years though...
We already have 6.9 million people in the U.S. that are 112-years-old according to the Social Security Amin. Anyone see that story?
Good God. And I was hoping to retire at 65. Do we really need a planet full of zetagenarians? I dunno. 300 years of assisted living seems like overkill.
