Lake Forest, CA (FOX 11) - A German Shepherd puppy was turned into a Southern California rescue shelter last week who had apparently chewed off its own foot to free himself from a chain.
The owners of "Rocky" turned the 10-month-old pup into a local shelter Nov. 9. They claimed they didn't know what happened to his hind foot, but they thought he might have "eaten it."

For the record:
Vets said he was suffering from a "massive infection in his leg and the tissue is all necrotic," according to the post.
Not 30 minutes or less, genius.

What a beautiful face. Just look at those eyes. Id adopt him right now. Man, that brings tears to my eyes.
Absolutely...And GS dogs hit my soft spot...We've always had German Shepherds in our family and are treated like family.

Could be, however infections can set in after an injury occurs. Necrosis is due to lose of blood in the tissues.
No?

In the common law, res ipsa loquitur (Latin for "the thing itself speaks") is a doctrine that states that the elements of duty of care and breach can sometimes be inferred from the very nature of an accident or other outcome, even without direct evidence of how any defendant behaved. Although modern formulations differ by jurisdiction, the common law originally stated that the accident must satisfy the necessary conditions of negligence

Just give the $2500 vet bill to the owner, and if he pays, he can call it a “freak accident.”

We currently have two sisters. My family has always had and loved GSDs.

What Bluejean said.
No excuse for this.
My dogs don’t even wear *collars* unless we’re going somewhere.

It is tragic for everyone involved. I do not see how the owners were intent on being abusive to the dog. They probably did not have a fence for him and thought that would be adequate. It may have been with a different dog. Large, young dogs can get themselves into all sorts of trouble.
I would guess the owners were at work. It is tragic, but probably they feel terrible enough already. I doubt they knew the particulars of the current time restraint law.
Everyone is a little too quick to judge. Maybe the owners are monsters, but I doubt it. They probably loved that dog.
Before you flame, i’m not sticking around to fight about it. Condemn the owners to death if you want.

I do not see how the owners were intent on being abusive to the dog. "Look, honey! Rover chewed his leg off!"
"Splendid. Let's wait and see if it gets infected before we ditch him."

What Bluejean said. No excuse for this. The poster said this:
Not an accident. Who the heck chains a puppy by the foot?
Begs the question, where in tarnation did the poster receive that information?
Could you provide a link for that?
Thanks.
