Lake Forest, CA (FOX 11) - A German Shepherd puppy was turned into a Southern California rescue shelter last week who had apparently chewed off its own foot to free himself from a chain.

The owners of "Rocky" turned the 10-month-old pup into a local shelter Nov. 9. They claimed they didn't know what happened to his hind foot, but they thought he might have "eaten it."

The owners of Rocky sure need to be questioned more on what happened.

the rescue group said that doctors believe Rocky was chained up and that the chain wrapped around his foot so tightly “that he literally chewed his own foot off to free himself from the confinement and the pain.”

“The owners of Rocky sure need to be questioned more on what happened.”

Orange County Animal Control has jurisdiction in this case. There is a lot of pressure for them to investigate more.

I am very near to physical pain at the thought of what that poor beautiful dog has gone through. Shepherds are majestic animals. He deserved so much better. I don’t wish ill to his owners, but I would wish they are never able to own another dog. That kind of cruelty is causing me a lot of mental anguish.

the rescue group said that doctors believe Rocky was chained up and that the chain wrapped around his foot so tightly “that he literally chewed his own foot off to free himself from the confinement and the pain.” Vets had to amputate the dog’s hind leg, but on Saturday the rescue center said on its website that Rocky was “walking like a pro on three legs,.

Very unfortunate, but appears to be an accident.

Beautiful dog...But I'd never personally rope up or chain up my dogs.

I want to do something really bad to these people. They are sick heartless sub-humans. Chain them by their feet until their feet are rotting off!!

It appears to be an accident, it was reported somehow the chain caught around the leg to the point it caused severe pain when the dog did what it did.

Orange County Animal Control can save their resources, a few of us concerned citizens will be happy to question the perps....er, previous owners to determine what occurred and take appropriate, so very appropriate action with the formerly fully limbed prior reprehensibles.

Not an accident. Who the heck chains a puppy by the foot? For For so long he develops sores and gangrene sets in?? And when they finally notice it (meaning no attention and utter neglect) instead of taking the suffering creature to a vet they drop him off at a shelter?? Seriously? Thinking they cam just drive away now that the damage is done. Hope they don’t have children. They might be pulling the same kind of crap. These people are idiots and this animal suffered because of their stupidity and callousness.

It appears to be an accident, ....

I hope that’s the case. There wasn’t enough information in this article for me to come to that conclusion.

“Very unfortunate, but appears to be an accident.”

It appears the dog was chained up and left unattended for an extended period of time, against the law in CA.

My thought is the owner(s) will be charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty and offered no jail time if they pay a fine, reimburse Coastal GSR for vet bills, and agree not to have pets for 10 years.

This link and others seem to suggest it was an accident.

I agree with you and can only hope this was some kind of freak accident. Otherwise I can’t say here what needs to be done to them.

I can tell you, once I was hooking up a dog very similar to this one in the article. I used a lapse on the leash that hooks on the collar ring. The dog raised it’s paw and somehow the lapse got caught on the webbing between it’s toes...Total freak accident. I wound up have to take a power drill to drill out the pin hold the lapse. It took me 25 minutes to drill out the pin...Trying to control the dog with the drill noise, vibration etc was not fun.

Just an insane freak incident.

I have no idea how long the dog was left unattended. The articles are not saying.

boyrude comes into the thread with comments in Spanish. Nice.

By the way, this incident does not prove the owner was guilty anything at this point. This entire incident could have occurred within 30 minutes or less..I don’t know exactly what occurred nor do you.

necrotic tissue . . . 30 minutes . . . riiigghht

Animal shelters are always looking for volunteers. Here's a tip: let other people do it, you can't.

What a beautiful face. Just look at those eyes.

I’d adopt him right now.

Man, that brings tears to my eyes.
