On this date in 1958, the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear-powered submarine, became the first naval vessel to reach the North Pole, having traveled under the icepack from the Barrow Sea across the North Pole and eventually surfacing north of Greenland. SSN-571 would be decommissioned in 1980, declared a National Historic Landmark in 1982, and is now a museum ship in Groton, Connecticut.

Hmmm. Not sure but lucky for us that today, nobody has to worry about surfacing through the ice or traveling under it since it’s all gone now thanks to algore. Northwest passage anyone? :>}

“Who were the top officers on that sub voyage?”

I know one was Troy Donahue. Wait a minute, that was a movie. (grin)

Can you name the movie?

The Nautilus Museum is a great museum, which Connecticut has many great museums... Mystic Seaport to Yale's Peabody to Connecticut Eastern Railroad Museum to Wadsworth Museumof Art.

IIf it wasn't the Liberals in Hartford, Connecticut is a wonderful state.

Skipper and principal author was Commander William R. Anderson, USN. The Book “Nautilus 90 North” was co-authored by Clay Blair Jr who later wrote “Silent Victory: The US Submarine War Against Japan”.

I read Anderson’s book in high school.

Old fogey that I am, I remember this accomplishment. I can remember my parents talking about it at the dinner table.
