Ron Paul: Hamas was started by Israel
Red State ^

Posted on 12/29/2011 5:53:03 PM PST by mnehring

Hamas was encouraged and started by the Israelis as a tool to counteract Yasser Arafat, so says Ron Paul.

Need I say more? Skip to 1:20 (Video at link)

(via Hotair)

***

UPDATE: Ed Morrissey described earlier today how Hamas came to be, and it wasn’t as Paul suggests:

So who started Hamas? Was it really Israel? Er … no, not really, and the suggestion that Israel wanted Hamas as a counterweight to the PLO is simply ludicrous. Hamas developed from a network of Muslim Brotherhood charities in Gaza in the mid-1980s. The Muslim Brotherhood was one of the most notorious of anti-Israeli organizations in the region, formed in the 1920s in opposition to the collapse of the Caliphate and the British Mandate that followed. At the founding of Hamas, it called for “jihad” to seize Israel and create an Islamist state from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea. They formed in direct opposition to the PLO (now called Fatah in the Palestinian Authority government), to some extent because Yasser Arafat was negotiating with Israel, albeit in bad faith while trying to drum up financial and political support in the West. Hamas gets its funding from Iran, hardly a disinterested third party in this conflict — and the main engine of radicalizing Muslims, eclipsing the Muslim Brotherhood ever since the Iranian revolution of 1979.

Also, Ron Paul fans, stop sending me the WSJ article that you think backs up Paul’s argument. Ed Morrissey took that apart as well. Jump over to Hotair and read the update.

Yeah sure Israel started Hamas just like they put Hitler in Office. How does it go? Those who attack the “apple of my eye” will be cursed.

I’m sure they’ll just say that isn’t Paul on video but a ‘Ghost Actor’ and Paul can’t be held responsible for the words that look like they came from his mouth.

What is the history here? Did Israel encourage a group to oppose Arafat? Did that group later become Hamas? I do not know. Do you?

It is in the article and Ed Morrisy over at Hot Air explains it in more detail.

The Muslim Brotherhood was one of the most notorious of anti-Israeli organizations in the region, formed in the 1920s in opposition to the collapse of the Caliphate and the British Mandate that followed. Sometimes when I hear the utter craziness coming out of his trap I think that he is just spewing this garbage because deep down psychologically he doesn’t want to win. He’s a nut, the GOP better wake up and toss this guy on his ass before they regret it

In the (hopefully) likely event that he does not get the GOP nomination and is not otherwise elected President as a Libertarian, he can always start a Unicorn petting zoo for kids!

O.K. Ron Paul was simply stating the fact of history. Way back in the olden days. Egypt ruled all the lands. It was the Egyptians that forced the Israelis to create Hamas. It was all over land disputes. Back then it was known as Olde West Bank.

So, the Egyptians created Olde West Bank. The Israelis were forced to choose sides and since war has broken out all over the Middle East. And then George W. Bush's interventionism is why we're still in Iraq twenty years later. And it's the reason we have a complete devaluation of the dollar. Because we're flying drones over in Iran - a country that's over there minding their own business and then George W. Bush went all nucular on them. Ron Paul for POTUS! /moonbat speech. LOL!

I never considered that until now. If not for this crazy foreign policy stuff he'd practically be President-Elect right now. More likely he's just a kook but self-sabotage is an interesting theory.

In an episode of MASH,Harry Morgan played a doctor who visited the 4077th. At first he seem a little strange, but by the end of the show, everybody knew the guy was completely fruitcake nuts.

Such is the progression of Ron Paul’s public persona in this campaign. Many of us here on FR knew it beforehand.
