Best Sci-Fi rock songs
June 12, 2011 | Vanity

Hi, FRiends. Was just looking for little levity and dreamed up this thread for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Please ignore if you don't want to play.

So what is your favorite science fiction-themed rock (or other musical genre) song? There are the obvious ones such as "Rocket Man" or "Space Oddity" but I'm curious as to what else is out there.

My choice is Queen's "39" from "A Night at the Opera," a bittersweet Brian May tale of the potential heartbreak among loved ones when some of them go on an interstellar voyage looking for a new planet. Probably my favorite Queen tune.

Your mileage - especially in light years - may vary.

Cheers, Jim

You already took my favorite! And Cygnus X1 was mentioned, so how about Red Barchetta? Here they are playing it live last year, 30 years after it was written:

The tour is on through this summer, with another album out soon. (And using the steam-punk theme.)

How about "Alien Chase on Arabian Desert" by Al Di Meola.

Also "Watcher of the Skies" by Genesis (Peter Gabriel on vocals).

May be a stretch, but a Journey to the Center of the Mind *could* be considered Sci Fi. Anyhow it’s the Amboy Dukes with our pal Ted Nugent on guitar.

I hate my iPad.

How about, “Dark Side of the Moon.”

Gotta be something out there from the Moody Blues. Just gotta get the mind working.
