“Chinese Terrorists Release in U.S. Imminent, No Answers From Holder”
by Rep. Frank Wolf
05/05/2009

Should foreigners picked up conducting terrorist training with Al Qaeda and subsequently held at Guantanamo Bay just be released into our communities, no questions asked? Believe it or not, it could happen. And soon.

The Obama administration is ready to release a number of Chinese Muslims, known as Uighurs, held at Guantanamo Bay since 2002 into the United States, according to several recent press reports.

Information I have received, however, indicates that the 17 Uighurs being held at Guantanamo may be more dangerous than the public has been led to believe. Both the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security have reportedly raised serious concerns about the release of the 17 detainees, who are said to be members of the Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement, a terrorist organization affiliated with Al Qaeda.

To be clear, we are not talking about transferring these folks to prisons in the United States. They would released, free and clear. “

“Obama’s Gitmo-to-Va. Uyghur Plan Hits A Wall: Jim Webb”
By James Gordon Meek

SNIPPET: “But we reported in The News today that the TIP, who ran the Afghan camp, released a jihad video last month in which they praised Al Qaeda-in-Iraq and the Uyghurs’ former Afghan hosts, the Taliban. The video was released through an Al Qaeda-affiliated Web site, Al-Fajr, and includes clips showing “mujahadeen brothers” blowing up U.S. military Humvees. The Uyghur jihadis “will cause China to experience what America experienced in Iraq and in Afghanistan,” a narrator promises, according to a SITE Intelligence Group translation.

It also probably didn’t help when Obama’s Treasury Department designated the group’s leader, Abdul Haq, as “a member of Al Qaeda’s Shura Council” on Apr. 20.

TIP’s praise for Al Qaeda in its video, “Persistence and Preparation for Jihad in the Cause of Allah,” was in some way payback to Osama Bin Laden’s deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri, who has mentioned the Uyghurs’ plight in China’s East Turkistan region five times in his tapes since 2005, according to IntelCenter. East Turkistan has been included in the context of major jihad struggles Zawahiri discussed, such as Somalia and Chechnya.”

“Senator Jim Webb doesn’t want Guantanamo prisoners brought to U.S.”
BY JAMES GORDON MEEK
DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU
Monday, May 18th 2009, 4:57 AM

Bam to keep military tribunals for Gitmo prisoners, but with protections
WASHINGTON - A key senator Sunday denounced plans to settle a group of Guantanamo Bay inmates in the Virginia suburbs as a video surfaced showing the detainees’ cozy ties to Al Qaeda.

“They accepted training from Al Qaeda and as a result they have taken part in terrorism,” Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) told ABC’s “This Week” Sunday. “I don’t believe they should come to the United States.”

Webb was referring to a half-dozen Gitmo Uyghurs, Muslims from China, who were mostly nabbed fleeing a terror training camp in eastern Afghanistan during the U.S. invasion.”

“Uighurs: Sometimes, the Obama Friday Night Bad News Dump Is Bad for the Left [Andy McCarthy]”

SNIPPET: “The Obama Justice Department told the Supreme Court this evening that the Uighurs have no right to be released into the United States.

The Uighurs, Chinese Muslim detainees held at Guantanamo Bay, received terrorist training at al Qaeda affiliated camps (from an organization formally designated as a foreign terrorist organization under U.S. law) and were captured after the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan. They are the Left’s combatant cause célèbre. The military took the incoherent position that they were trained al Qaeda terrorists but that their real beef was with China, not us. Thus, the federal courts have held that they are not enemy combatants. The government has been trying to relocate them for years but no country will take the remaining 17 — other than China, where our treaty obligations arguably forbid us from sending them because there is reason to believe they’d be persecuted.

Of course, it’s one thing to say that they are not enemy combatants and should therefore be released. It is quite another thing, though, to say that they should be released into the United States (which, because of their terrorist affiliations, would violate federal immigration law).”

“U.S. opposes Uighurs’ plea”
Friday, May 29th, 2009 5:27 pm | Lyle Denniston
UPDATE 9 p.m.

The Obama Administration urged the Supreme Court on Friday to turn away the plea by 17 Chinese Muslim Uighurs for release from Guantanamo Bay for settling temporarily inside the U.S. The U.S. Solicitor General’s brief in opposition in Kiyemba, et al., v. Obama, et al. (08-1234) can be downloaded here. Although no longer considered enemies, their continued confinement at Guantanamo is constitutionally valid, the brief asserted.

The Uighurs, Solicitor General Elena Kagan wrote, “have already obtained relief. They are no longer detained as enemy combatants, they are free to leave Guantanamo Bay to any country that is willing to accept them, and in the meantime, they are housed in facilities separate from those for enemy combatants under the least restrictive conditions practicable.””

GUANTANAMO BAY PRISON CAMPS
“Some Guantánamo detainees to get laptops”
BY CAROL ROSENBERG

SNIPPET: “GUANTANAMO BAY NAVY BASE, Cuba — These captives already get to order fast-food takeout from the base and have access to a phone booth for weekly calls. Now some 17 Uighur Muslims awaiting a nation to grant them asylum are about to go high-tech, with laptops and web training.”

SNIPPET: “Attorney General Eric Holder said some could come to the United States for resettlement, triggering protests from members of Congress around Virginia, where other Uighurs live and have offered to settle them.

Nury Turkel, a Washington, D.C.-based Uighur rights activist, hailed the computer training development. Internet access could allow the men to listen to Uighur broadcasts of Radio Free Asia, he said.”

Germany Seeks to Avoid Taking Uighurs
http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,629299,00.html | 06/08/09 | cgh — SPIEGEL
Posted on June 8, 2009 2:08:44 PM PDT by greatplains

US President Barack Obama had been hoping that Germany would take nine Guantanamo detainees deemed ready for release. But Berlin has presented a list of conditions — which likely can’t be met.

During his brief visit to Germany last week, US President Barack Obama told the gathered press in Dresden that, when it came to the possibility of Germany accepting some of the Guantanamo prisoners due to be released, concrete demands were not yet on the table.

DPA German Interior Minister Wolfgang Schäuble is opposed to accepting Uighur detainees from Guantanamo. “We have not asked (Chancellor Angela Merkel) for hard commitments, and she has not given us any hard commitments beyond having a serious discussion about (whether there are) ways that we can solve this problem” Obama declared.

Strictly speaking, that may be true. But according to information obtained by SPIEGEL, Germany has long since blocked the idea of accepting Guantanamo detainees — and has done so without having to issue an outright rejection.

UNCONFIRMED.

“Chinese terrorist leader Abdul Haq al Turkistani is dead: Pakistani interior minister”
By BILL ROGGIOMay 7, 2010 12:17 PM

PHOTO CAPTION: “A Uighur terrorist, from a videotape released by the Eastern Turkistan Islamic Party in 2008.”

SNIPPET: “The top leader of a Chinese terror group with close links to al Qaeda has been killed in Pakistan, according to Pakistan’s Interior Minister. The report has not been confirmed.

Abdul Haq al Turkistani, the leader of the Eastern Turkistan Islamic Party, has been killed in Pakistan, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said during a conference in Beijing, China. Malik also claimed that the terror group’s “back is broken” and that the group is no longer viable inside Pakistan.

“I am happy to inform you that their back is broken, it’s weakened,” Malik said, according to a report in Dawn. “We treat ETIM not only as an enemy of China but also as an enemy of Pakistan .... Now the other so-called gang leader Haq has been killed recently, I can confirm that.”

Malik has not provided any evidence of Haq’s death, nor did he detail the place and date that Haq was killed.

US intelligence officials contacted by The Long War Journal would not confirm Haq’s death but said they were aware of the rumors.

Haq was rumored to have been killed in a US Predator airstrike in North Waziristan on Feb. 15, but the report was never confirmed. The ETIP has not issued a martyrdom statement announcing Haq’s death, nor has it named a replacement leader.

Malik and senior Pakistani officials have an atrocious track record for accuracy in reporting the deaths of top Taliban, al Qaeda, and allied jihadist groups’ leaders.”
