Eisenhower called it "the incomparable power of an aroused democracy." But you're right, Sam, our enemies, themselves governed by mostly by fascist or marxist states, just don't get it. They think democracies are weak because we sound so materialistic and divided. They don't understand that although we are slow to arouse, once we are aroused to the fight the nation is solidly behind the cause. It took Bush a year to make his case on Iraq, but once he went to war he was backed by a congressional vote, a U.N. vote and a solid majority of the American people.
