There's a good book out called "Hitler's Panzers East" that makes a good argument that the Germans could have taken Moscow in 1941, if some different decisions had been made.

I just finished a biography of Rommel, who at one time was a great admirer of Hitler. From the quotes of what Hitler said during the Normandy campaign in 1944, Hitler seemed completely detached from reality by that time.
