I have listed in my blogroll the website for Military Penpals...plus if you go to the entry for Monday February 3rd, I make mention of an article I found in my husband's Fish & Game magazine...about sending care packages to our military in the form of small outdoor gear.

If anyone has any ideas about what I could keep as a permanent post or contactees to list, let me know!!

The 101st Airbourne has just be deployed. I am a member of that outfit. I'm not going with them, I wish I could, but I was a 101st Ranger in VietNam. The will of the corps does not change.

Take this with you: Go to the war with your training, your will, and your love of country. I sat a day before the final combat, it was the longest day of my life. A soldier wants to fight the Goddamn thing and get it overwith, I know, I've been there. Take a deep breath and wait. The waiting is the hardest part, again, I know. Take another chance to check your ammo, your gear, your resolve. When the time comes you'll need all of that.

When the light goes green, you jump out of that aircraft with one though in your mind....win this war! When you hit the ground you make the enemy pay, and pay large!

I wish I could be with you, but I'm and old man of 55 that couldn't make the jump, but I'm still your brother.

The President of the United States has ordered in the Airbourne, that means it's getting rough.

As the tears drip on my keyboard, you Airbourne, you "better than most", you flying soldiers, you make me proud. I know you will. There are no other troops better than we, the 101st Airbourne Division. Death from the Sky! Kick his ass, with all the courage you have in that outfit!

Espri' de Corps....the spirit of the Corps. Nothing will take our victory from us, for we are Airbourne, and the Airbourne will always win!

The 100th Infantry Battalion/442 Regimental Combat Team, made up of Japanese Americans from Hawaii and the concentration camps on the mainland, became legendary because of their exploits in Europe during World War II. In just 225 days of combat between 1944-45, the 442nd compiled a remarkable record and became the most decorated unit for its size and length of service in American military history. Perhaps the most famous of the 442nd accomplishments was the heroic rescue of the Texas "Lost Battalion" which had been caught behind enemy lines. In a ferocious battle, the 442nd suffered over 800 casualties (including 184 killed) to rescue 211 members of the Texas battalion.

The 100th/442nd stayed in Europe as occupation troops for over a year after the war there had ended. By 1946, all of the veterans had been replaced by new troops. Lieutenant General John C. H. Lee salutes the colors of the 100th/442nd at the awards ceremony held in Livorno (Leghorn), Italy, in June 1946.

I had a friend whose father and brother were first generation Americans growing up in Chicago. When Pearl Harbor was attacked, both men independently took off to go to their local recruiting stations to enlist the next morning, but only his father made it there. His uncle was jumped and beaten so bad that he became a vegtable, and was still wearing diapers and being fed in the middle 1970's. That's what blind racism sometimes brings you. On the other hand, his father went on to become one of the soldiers in the 442nd that won a Silver Star,a Bronze Star, and 3 Purple Hearts.

I can understand interning and deporting Foriegn Nationals but most were American Citizens and didn't deserve the treatment they received.

One student said it is also a warning to those like FDR, that if they turn their back on the U.S. Constitution again, they will end up being exposed by 8th Graders.

Oh that it were so! LOL!
