From what I've heard, our guys were taking quite a few Chinese prisoners in the fall of '50 but thought that they were mostly North Korean with some Chinese "volunteers". I believe it was at Unsan around the first week of November, before Chosin, that we suffered the first all-out assault from the Chinese; I can't recall the American commander's name (maybe you know) who called back to MacArthur's HQ that "We're being attacked by a bunch of Laundrymen!!" when he realized that it was Red Chinese regulars that our guys were up against.

Ned Almond, the X Corps commander was quoted as saying"
"The enemy who is attacking you is nothing more than some remnants of Chinese divisions fleeing north. We are still attacking and we're going all the way to the Yalu. Don't let a bunch of Chinese laundrymen stop you."
I don't which commander told him he was being attacked by laundrymen but it should be one of the greates lines of the war, IMHO.
Since it was Task Force Smith that was engaged at Unsan I wonder if it was LTC Charles B. Smith who said that?
